MUMBAI: Some road trips chase destinations; this one is driving through history. Mercedes-Benz has flagged off the India leg of its global ‘140 Years. 140 Places.’ initiative, with three S-Class luxury limousines embarking on a transcontinental journey celebrating 140 years since Carl Benz patented the world’s first automobile in 1886.

The global expedition features three S-Class vehicles Gotlieb, Carl and Bertha travelling more than 60,000 kilometres across six continents, 55-plus countries and 140 landmark locations, showcasing the brand’s technological heritage and its enduring influence on luxury mobility.

In India, the drive shifts the spotlight from roads to stories, tracing the country’s landscapes, craftsmanship, culture and innovation through two distinct routes. The S-Class, Mercedes-Benz’s flagship luxury limousine, serves as the central symbol of the brand’s legacy of engineering, comfort and technological advancement.

Gotlieb will take the northern route, beginning in New Delhi before travelling through Amritsar, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The route includes some of the world’s most challenging mountain roads, including Umling La, the world’s highest motorable pass, and the Himalayan passes around Manali, highlighting the S-Class’s engineering capabilities in extreme conditions. The journey then heads to Lucknow, Varanasi and Patna, celebrating India’s traditions, spirituality and craftsmanship before crossing into Bhutan, the tour’s only international stop, and eventually returning to Delhi.

Meanwhile, Carl and Bertha will travel west and south from New Delhi, passing through Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad, before arriving in Pune, home to Mercedes-Benz India’s manufacturing facility. From there, the routes diverge, with one car heading to Mumbai while the other explores Hampi, before reuniting in Bengaluru, where the company’s research and development centre is located. The expedition then continues through Goa before concluding in Mumbai.

The initiative forms part of Mercedes-Benz’s global celebration of 140 years of automotive innovation, reflecting its journey from inventing the automobile in 1886 to developing today’s intelligent, connected luxury vehicles. The campaign also coincides with one of the company’s most ambitious product programmes, reinforcing its focus on shaping the future of mobility while honouring its pioneering legacy.

At the heart of the journey is the S-Class, which Mercedes-Benz describes as the flagship embodiment of its commitment to innovation, safety, comfort and luxury, a rolling reminder that some milestones are best celebrated from behind the wheel.
