Washington Post names media veteran Alex Wallace chief operating officer
The former Yahoo executive vice president joins on 19th October to work with chief executive Jeff D’Onofrio as the newspaper chases its closest path to profitability in five years
WASHINGTON DC: A new number two, and a clear mission. The Washington Post has appointed media veteran Alex Wallace as its chief operating officer, the newspaper said on Thursday, 8th October. Wallace will start on 19th October and work with chief executive Jeff D’Onofrio to align teams across the company and track performance against business goals, the Post said.
Wallace arrives with a heavyweight CV. She has worked as executive vice president and head of media and content at Yahoo, where she oversaw a portfolio spanning Yahoo News, Sports, Entertainment and Finance, as well as TechCrunch and other media and content businesses. Earlier, she held production and editorial leadership positions at CBS News and NBC News.
The timing matters. The appointment comes as the Post works to improve its financial performance. The company said last month it expects to end 2026 on its closest path to profitability in five years. The hire suggests the newspaper wants an operator who can turn ambition into measurable results.
The Post has also been busy on the brand front. Last week it released its inaugural impact report and launched a campaign called “Relentless”, aimed at highlighting the work of its newsroom. A chief operating officer who has run both editorial and commercial portfolios looks well suited to a business pushing on all these fronts at once.
