LeapFrog plans up to $100 million India healthcare investments over two years

MUMBAI: Global private equity firm LeapFrog Investments plans to invest between $80 million and $100 million in India’s healthcare sector over the next two years, as it looks to tap rising demand for medical services across the country, Reuters reported.

The investment push comes as expanding insurance coverage, growing use of diagnostics and preventive care, and increasing awareness around chronic diseases drive healthcare spending in India.

India’s healthcare sector was valued at around $180 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $320 billion by 2028, according to government data.

The sector has also attracted significant private capital. Healthcare and pharmaceutical businesses recorded 594 mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions worth more than $30 billion between 2022 and 2024, according to data from Grant Thornton Bharat and the Association of Healthcare Providers India.

Among the more recent large transactions was KKR’s agreement to acquire the India business of Medicover Hospitals for 1.2 billion euros, or around $1.4 billion.

London-based LeapFrog is evaluating investments across several healthcare segments, including hospitals, particularly those serving patients outside India’s major cities.

The firm is also looking at specialty-care providers focused on maternal and child health, ophthalmology and oncology, as well as asset-light, single-specialty healthcare businesses.

LeapFrog’s India portfolio already includes diagnostics provider Redcliffe Labs and digital health platform Healthify.

The firm is also exploring opportunities in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment as part of its broader healthcare investment strategy.

The focus on healthcare is being supported by two key trends: rising insurance penetration and increasing disposable incomes that are enabling more consumers to access quality medical services.

LeapFrog is investing through an $808 million fund and related co-investment vehicles, giving the firm more than $1 billion to deploy across Asia and Africa.

While a significant portion of that capital has already been invested, including recent investments in the Philippines and Vietnam, India remains a key market for future deployment.

The planned investment comes as private equity firms increasingly look beyond major Indian cities for healthcare opportunities, particularly in specialised care, diagnostics and healthcare services where demand is growing faster than the availability of organised providers.

For LeapFrog, the strategy combines India’s expanding healthcare market with a growing pool of insured consumers, creating a sizeable runway for investments over the next two years.
