Kumara Raghavan named GM of Microsoft India’s SME and channel business

Bengaluru: Kumara Raghavan has been handed the keys to Microsoft India and South Asia’s small, medium enterprises and channel business, stepping up to general manager after a year as senior director running the same patch. It is a promotion that puts him squarely in charge of one of the software giant’s most closely watched growth engines, the small and medium businesses that make up the bulk of India’s enterprise economy.

Raghavan arrives with a résumé that reads like a tour of the technology industry’s back rooms. Four and a half years at Amazon Web Services saw him lead the India start-up sales segment, chasing the country’s next generation of cloud-hungry companies. Before that came six and a half years at Lenovo, where he moved through roles in software-defined infrastructure, product management and channel strategy across the Asia Pacific region, and, earlier still, over fifteen years at IBM spanning sales and product management across growth markets stretching from Asia to Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. His career, in short, has covered nearly every corner of the enterprise technology map, bar Antarctica.

The new brief puts Raghavan at the sharp end of Microsoft’s channel network and partner ecosystem in India, a business built on nurturing high-performance teams and squeezing profitability out of a sprawling partner base. He credited Vaishali Kasture, Rachel Bondi and Ralph Haupter for backing the move, a customary nod in an industry where reshuffles are as much about relationships as results.

Whether Raghavan’s appointment marks a fresh push into India’s small business heartland or simply business as usual for Microsoft’s revolving leadership door, the message from Bengaluru is clear: the company is betting big on the country’s smaller enterprises, and it has just put a career channel man in charge of making that bet pay off.
