JioStar reunites Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in a new film ahead of the 2027 World Cup
The cricket legends crack jokes, mimic teammates’ celebrations and look ahead to what may be their final ICC World Cup campaign
MUMBAI: Two legends, one sofa-style chat and a World Cup on the horizon. JioStar has unveiled a new film bringing together Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in a rare and candid coming together, setting the stage for what promises to be a monumental year ahead for Team India. The film was released on 7 October 2026.
The timing is sharp. With the road to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 gathering momentum, the duo look ahead to an action-packed year for Indian cricket, beginning with Sri Lanka’s tour of India from 13 December. India are setting their sights on a fourth consecutive ICC title, while Rohit and Kohli look ahead to their final ICC World Cup campaign. That makes 2027, in the words of the release, a significant chapter in Indian cricket.
Conceptualised by JioStar, the film places the two in a light-hearted conversation as they reminisce about their journey with Team India. It celebrates their passion for the game and offers fans a glimpse of the duo’s playful side, as they cheekily recreate the signature celebrations of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and captain Shubman Gill. As the conversation draws to a close, the two turn their attention to the road ahead and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which sets up the film’s punchline: “Desh ka sawaal hai, maza toh aayega” (It’s a matter of the country’s pride, it’s going to be fun).
The on-field backdrop is healthy. India are fresh off a 2-1 series victory over the West Indies, with less than a year to go before the World Cup. The upcoming one-day international assignments, beginning with Sri Lanka, will be key to the team’s preparations, with respect to form and combination, particularly with Kohli and Rohit headlining the playing XI. Viewers can catch all the live action from the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, from 13 to 19 December, exclusively on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network.
The analysis is simple. Cricket promos usually trade on grandeur. This one trades on friendship, humour and a little mischief, which is a smart way to warm up an audience for a long build-up. Pairing two of the sport’s biggest names, and having them gently lampoon three teammates, gives the film a shareable edge, and the closing line is built to travel. For JioStar, it is an early marker in the run to the World Cup and a reminder that its rights to the Sri Lanka series, across JioHotstar and Star Sports Network, will be the first stop on that road. For fans, it is a cheerful nudge that the best part of the next year may well be the cricket itself.
