IndusInd General Insurance appoints Sharad Mathur as managing director and CEO
Former Universal Sompo chief brings three decades of experience to drive growth and digital innovation
MUMBAI: IndusInd General Insurance has a new captain at the helm. The insurer has appointed Sharad Mathur as its managing director and chief executive officer following statutory approvals, bringing nearly three decades of experience in insurance and financial services to its next phase of growth.
Formerly known as Reliance General Insurance Company, the insurer is part of the IndusInd International Holdings Limited (IIHL) Group.
Mathur joins from Universal Sompo General Insurance, where he served as managing director and CEO for more than six years. During his tenure, he led organisational transformation, expanded distribution, strengthened risk management and underwriting discipline, and improved technology-led customer services.
He previously held leadership positions at SBI General Insurance and ICICI Lombard, contributing to their growth during their formative years.
At IndusInd General Insurance, Mathur will focus on customer experience, digital innovation, insurance inclusion, profitable growth and governance. His priorities include expanding distribution partnerships and building a resilient, technology-enabled organisation with a stronger focus on customers.
His appointment comes as insurers look to widen access to insurance, strengthen digital services and build sustainable growth while managing risks and improving operational efficiency.
Mathur is a fellow member of the Institute of Directors and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, India. He has also completed executive leadership and compliance programmes at the University of Pennsylvania, the Indian School of Business, Harvard Business School and the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.
With experience spanning established insurers and businesses in their early growth stages, Mathur takes charge with a broad mandate: to strengthen distribution, make insurance more accessible and improve customer service while maintaining financial discipline.
For IndusInd General Insurance, the next test will be turning that experience into measurable growth and a more customer-focused insurance business.
