MUMBAI: The proof, it seems, is in the pudding and the cake, pastry and brownie too. India’s love affair with desserts is showing no signs of cooling down. New data from Justdial reveals a steady rise in consumer interest in bakeries, homemade desserts, celebration cakes and cake delivery services, reflecting how sweet treats are becoming an increasingly important part of everyday indulgence and special occasions alike.

The analysis, comparing search trends between June 2025–May 2026 and June 2024–May 2025, found that searches for Bakery and Homemade Dessert Services rose 11 per cent across India. The growth points to increasing demand for artisanal bakes, customised creations and small-batch dessert offerings.

Among major cities, Pune emerged as the fastest-growing market, recording a 24 per cent jump in searches. Mumbai followed with a 19 per cent increase, while Delhi registered growth of 18 per cent. Bengaluru posted a 12 per cent rise, with Hyderabad and Kolkata recording increases of 9 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.

The appetite for celebration cakes also continued to grow. Searches for Celebration Cakes and Delivery Services increased 6 per cent nationwide, underscoring the growing role of cakes in birthdays, anniversaries, festive gatherings, corporate milestones and intimate celebrations.

While metro cities remained key demand centres, some of the strongest growth came from emerging markets. Chandigarh led the category with a remarkable 41 per cent increase in searches, followed by Malappuram at 31 per cent. Thiruvananthapuram recorded a 14 per cent rise, while Delhi, Surat and Hyderabad posted increases of 13 per cent, 10 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.

The trends suggest Indian consumers are increasingly seeking convenience, personalisation and premium experiences when it comes to desserts. From neighbourhood bakeries and home chefs to customised cakes delivered to doorsteps, the market is expanding well beyond traditional festive demand.

The growth also reflects changing social habits, where smaller celebrations, gifting occasions and spontaneous indulgences are creating year-round demand for bakery products. As consumers continue to search for more variety and customised options, desserts are evolving from an occasional treat into an everyday lifestyle choice.

For bakeries and dessert businesses, the message is clear: India’s sweet tooth is not only growing, it is becoming more sophisticated.
