India auto retail sales hit record high in August as EV demand accelerates

Alternative-fuel cars overtake petrol as rural demand and electric mobility drive August growth

MUMBAI: India’s auto market shifted into a higher gear in August, with vehicle retail sales reaching a record high even as buyers increasingly moved towards alternative powertrains.

Retail vehicle registrations rose 17.51 per cent year on year to a record 24,23,201 units in August 2026, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Sales declined 6.48 per cent month on month, reflecting the seasonal monsoon slowdown and changes in the festive calendar. However, five major vehicle categories recorded their highest-ever August retail volumes.

The bigger story was playing out in passenger vehicles, where the fuel mix crossed a significant threshold.

For the first time, alternative fuels collectively accounted for 41.95 per cent of passenger vehicle registrations. CNG contributed 25.28 per cent, hybrids 9.04 per cent and electric vehicles 7.63 per cent.

Petrol, including ethanol-blended fuel, accounted for 40.85 per cent.

The shift marks a sharp change from a year earlier, when petrol enjoyed an advantage of around 11 percentage points over alternative powertrains. Running costs, along with consumer uncertainty around the transition to E20 fuel, are increasingly influencing powertrain choices.

Two-wheelers remained the biggest contributor to the overall market, with retail sales of 17,14,610 units, up 19.69 per cent from August 2025.

Although volumes fell 5.70 per cent from July, August was the category’s strongest performance for the month since 2018.

Electric two-wheelers also crossed a notable threshold, accounting for 10.68 per cent of two-wheeler retail sales. It was the first time their share crossed 10 per cent during a non-festive month.

Passenger vehicle registrations reached 4,02,398 units, rising 16.14 per cent year on year despite a 3.40 per cent month-on-month decline. August was the first time PV registrations crossed the four-lakh mark.

Commercial vehicle sales rose 14.45 per cent year on year to 90,769 units, although volumes fell 8.93 per cent month on month. Electric commercial vehicles reached a record monthly penetration of 5.18 per cent.

Three-wheeler retail sales increased 8.64 per cent to 1,22,281 units. Electric models accounted for 65.30 per cent of all three-wheelers sold.

Wheeled construction equipment posted the fastest category growth, with sales rising 31.45 per cent to 5,166 units.

Tractor sales, however, remained under pressure. Volumes rose just 0.84 per cent year on year to 87,977 units and fell 25.03 per cent from July, reflecting weaker monsoon conditions.

Across all segments, electric vehicle retail sales jumped 52.9 per cent year on year to 2,98,448 units. Overall EV penetration reached 12.3 per cent.

One of the strongest signals from the August data was the performance of rural markets.

Rural passenger vehicle sales grew 24.99 per cent year on year, significantly ahead of 10.93 per cent growth in urban markets.

The gap was narrower in two-wheelers, but rural growth still led at 20.25 per cent compared with 19.07 per cent in urban areas.

Rural commercial vehicle sales increased 16.33 per cent, compared with 12.79 per cent in urban markets. The sharpest divergence came in three-wheelers, where rural sales jumped 23.95 per cent while urban sales declined 6.95 per cent.

Tractors were the major exception. Sales were hit by a 13 per cent nationwide rainfall deficit affecting 14 states, highlighting the continuing dependence of the farm economy on monsoon conditions.

The broader rural performance, however, suggests that demand is increasingly being supported by activities beyond farming, including goods transportation, local mobility and infrastructure-linked work.

Maruti Suzuki India retained the top position in passenger vehicles, selling 1,65,200 units and commanding a 41.05 per cent market share.

Tata Motors followed with 57,841 units and a 14.37 per cent share, while Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 50,245 units, giving it a 12.49 per cent share.

In two-wheelers, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India led with 4,47,342 units and a 26.09 per cent share.

Hero MotoCorp was second with 4,13,996 units and a 24.15 per cent share, followed by TVS Motor Company with 3,53,746 units and a 20.63 per cent share.

Tata Motors also led the commercial vehicle segment with 30,338 units and a 33.42 per cent share. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 23,998 units, while Ashok Leyland sold 16,649 units.

In tractors, Mahindra & Mahindra, including its Swaraj division, commanded a combined 41.62 per cent share with 36,617 units.

The August numbers may look impressive, but dealers are being urged to read the fine print.

Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations president Sai Giridhar cautioned that the year-on-year jump has been helped by a weak comparison base.

In August 2025, many consumers had postponed vehicle purchases while waiting for GST 2.0 rate cuts, creating a favourable base for this year’s growth.

Inventory is another concern, particularly in passenger vehicles. PV inventory has increased by around five days to 38 to 40 days, well above FADA’s preferred 21-day level. Around 56 per cent of PV dealers reported excess stock.

The coming festive season will therefore be critical for manufacturers and dealers.

Around 67.09 per cent of dealers expect sales to grow in September, while 81.62 per cent remain optimistic about the September to November quarter covering the peak festive period from Ganesh Chaturthi through Navratri and Diwali.

However, high manufacturer dispatches, the 13 per cent rainfall deficit and vehicle price increases introduced from September 1 could test whether strong showroom interest translates into actual purchases.

August may have delivered a record drive, but the festive season will determine whether India’s auto market can keep its foot on the accelerator.
