Price hike from September follows Maruti Suzuki move amid rising costs and weaker Q1 profit

MUMBAI: Hyundai is putting a little more weight on the price pedal. Hyundai Motor India will increase vehicle prices by up to 1 per cent across its portfolio from September 2026, citing sustained pressure from input and commodity costs, operating expenses and wider geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties.

In a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, the automaker said the exact increase would vary across models and variants. Hyundai added that it had been absorbing part of the cost pressure through internal cost optimisation, but continued increases had made a partial price revision necessary.

The move comes just a day after Maruti Suzuki announced a price increase across its Arena and Nexa range. Effective August 2026, Maruti’s latest hike ranges from Rs 2,500 to Rs 30,000, depending on the model and variant.

The back-to-back price revisions underline the cost squeeze facing India’s passenger vehicle makers, which are attempting to protect margins while competing in a market where pricing remains a key lever for attracting buyers.

Hyundai’s announcement also comes after a weaker first quarter.

The company’s consolidated profit after tax fell 35.1 per cent year on year to Rs 888.6 crore in Q1 FY27, from Rs 1,369.2 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue from operations remained broadly flat at Rs 16,334.6 crore, compared with Rs 16,412.9 crore a year earlier.

Profitability, meanwhile, took a sharper hit. EBITDA declined 31 per cent to Rs 1,511 crore, while the EBITDA margin narrowed to 9.3 per cent from 13.3 per cent.

Total expenses rose 4.2 per cent to Rs 15,407.4 crore, outpacing the movement in revenue and adding to the pressure on earnings.

The sequential picture was also weaker. Profit fell 29.2 per cent from Rs 1,255.6 crore in the March quarter, while revenue declined 13.7 per cent.

With costs moving up and profitability under pressure, Hyundai’s September price revision puts the spotlight on how much of that burden will ultimately move from the factory floor to the showroom.
