MUMBAI: Regional entertainment rarely gets the spotlight it deserves, but Hema V.R.’s latest move is worth the attention. Zee Entertainment Enterprises has handed her the newly combined mandate of chief channel officer across Zee Marathi, Marathi Zee 5, Zee Talkies and Zee Yuva, folding four properties that once sat somewhat separately into a single Marathi entertainment business under one P&L owner.

It is the natural next step for someone who has spent nearly sixteen years inside Zee, almost the entirety of her professional life. Hema started as brand head for Zee Marathi back in 2011, spent six years building marketing and campaign strategy for the channel, then moved into consumer strategy and insights, followed by a stint as executive vice president for consumer strategy and marketing, where she led market-entry campaigns for six new channel launches, Zee Keralam, Zee Punjabi, Zee Biskope, Zee Thirai, Zee Picchar and Zee Zest, alongside brand refreshes for Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Kannada, Zee Anmol and Zee Ganga. That is a rare vantage point inside one company, watching nearly every regional language bet Zee has made over the past decade from close range.

The real proof of concept came when she took full ownership of Zee Marathi and Marathi Zee 5 in October 2023. The channel had been losing ground for years, and by her own account she drove a business turnaround, closing the competitive gap and pushing viewership share to the edge of category leadership, while simultaneously scaling ZEE5 Marathi into a genuine high-growth regional OTT platform on users, consumption and revenue all at once. That is not a small brief. Regional OTT in India is a brutal, thin-margin fight, and turning a mature broadcast brand and a nascent streaming platform around at the same time, with shared resources and overlapping audiences, is the sort of dual mandate that breaks most operators.

Expanding her charge to include Zee Talkies and Zee Yuva now looks less like a reward lap and more like a consolidation play. Zee has clearly decided that whoever can fix Marathi Marathi television and streaming simultaneously should own the entire regional stack, movies, youth programming and all, rather than splitting strategy across multiple channel heads competing for the same eyeballs and the same advertisers.

For Zee, still working through its own broader turnaround story after a turbulent few years, betting on internal talent with an 18-year track record of scaling audience-led businesses is a low-risk, high-conviction move. For Hema, it is validation that consumer insight, translated into disciplined execution, still wins in Indian television, even in an era when everyone insists the future belongs entirely to the app.
