HDFC Bank turns fraud awareness into a seven-episode comedy special
Vigil Aunty Says uses stand-up to show how pausing can help avoid digital fraud
MUMBAI: In the fight against fraud, a little aalsi could go a long way. HDFC Bank and Kinnect have extended the bank’s Vigil Aunty fraud-awareness platform into a seven-episode stand-up comedy special, using humour to drive home a serious message: when a scammer wants you to act fast, sometimes doing nothing is the smartest move.
Titled ‘Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves’, the special is streaming exclusively on JioHotstar and tackles one of the oldest tricks in the fraudster’s playbook creating urgency. From suspicious links and requests for OTPs to threats involving so-called digital arrests, scammers often rely on panic to push people into making split-second decisions.
The campaign flips that tactic on its head by making laziness the unlikely hero. Each episode centres on a different form of everyday aalsas or laziness, with the comedians using familiar situations to reinforce the idea that stopping, thinking and checking before responding can help consumers avoid falling into a fraudster’s trap.
The seven-episode line-up features Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui and Kenny Sebastian, giving the financial-safety message a distinctly stand-up flavour.
The idea does not stop at the screen. The campaign also takes its laziness theme outdoors with a deliberately unfinished billboard. Designed to look as though workers simply abandoned the installation halfway through, the execution carries the line ‘Laziness Has Spread Everywhere’.
Ravi Santhanam, chief marketing officer and group head, HDFC Bank, said fraudsters use panic and urgency to manipulate people into making quick mistakes. He said the campaign uses comedy and the Vigil Aunty platform to explain fraudsters’ methods in a format audiences are more likely to engage with.
For Jahid Ahmed, senior vice-president and head of growth and digital marketing, HDFC Bank, the opportunity was to turn the growing popularity of stand-up comedy into a way of discussing digital safety. He described pausing or being ‘lazy’ as a way of countering the fake urgency created by fraudsters.
Chandni Shah, CEO, Kinnect, said the campaign takes Vigil Aunty into a new format by combining entertainment, education and popular culture, while Yogesh Mani Pradhan, group ECD, Kinnect, said humour could help audiences engage with subjects they might otherwise ignore.
The seven-episode special has premiered on JioHotstar and is now available to stream, turning an everyday habit most people would normally try to shake into the campaign’s central fraud-fighting message.
