Google brings Gemini in Chrome to Android in India, adds auto browse
AI assistant can now handle tasks such as forms, parking bookings and grocery orders
MUMBAI: Browsing is getting a little less browser-heavy, with Google expanding Gemini in Chrome to Android users in India and bringing its auto browse feature to desktop and Android for subscribers of its AI Pro and AI Ultra plans.
Google said Gemini in Chrome, its AI browsing assistant, is now available to all Android users in India. The feature was introduced on desktops in the country earlier this year.
Gemini in Chrome is designed to help users interact with web content without constantly switching between tabs. It can summarise lengthy articles, answer questions about webpages and work with Google apps such as Keep and Calendar.
The assistant can also customise and generate images on the go using Nano Banana, giving users access to Google’s image-generation capabilities directly within the Chrome browsing experience.
The bigger addition for Indian users is auto browse, which is now available on both desktop and Android for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
Auto browse is designed to take on repetitive online tasks on behalf of users. These include booking parking for an event, filling out lengthy forms and ordering groceries.
The feature aims to reduce the number of manual steps involved in everyday online activities, allowing users to give Gemini a task while retaining control over actions that require additional confirmation.
Google said the capabilities have been built with security in mind. Its models are trained to detect known threats, including prompt injection attacks, which can attempt to manipulate an AI system through instructions embedded in webpages.
Auto browse also includes safeguards for sensitive activities. The system can ask users for confirmation before completing certain actions, giving them an opportunity to review and approve what is about to happen.
Google senior director, product management, Chrome Charmaine Dsilva said the expansion brings Gemini’s browsing assistance to more users in India, while auto browse is aimed at making routine online tasks less time-consuming.
With Gemini in Chrome now available across desktop and Android in India, Google is positioning Chrome as more than a conventional browser, with AI increasingly taking on tasks alongside users rather than simply helping them find information.
