Genesys International appoints Dhiman Basu Ray as chief technology officer
Dhiman Basu Ray joins as chief technology officer, tasked with turning the company’s mapping business into an AI-powered spatial intelligence platform
MUMBAI: Mapping companies have spent decades getting very good at telling you where things are. Genesys International’s latest hire is about getting machines to understand what that means. The geospatial technology company has appointed Dhiman Basu Ray as chief technology officer, bringing in a technology and digital engineering leader with roughly 26 years of experience to steer its shift from digital twins toward what the company calls AI-powered spatial intelligence.
Basu Ray’s pedigree is squarely suited to that ambition. He arrives from Tech Mahindra, where he served as global chief technology officer for digital engineering, and has held senior leadership roles across major global technology organisations, with experience spanning artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, product and platform engineering, cloud and data platforms, software-defined vehicles and cybersecurity. That is a considerably broader skill set than traditional mapping talent, and it is precisely the point.
Sajid Malik, chairman and managing director of Genesys International, framed the appointment as part of a deeper strategic shift, describing the company’s trajectory as moving from mapping the world to making the physical world computable. What was historically viewed as mapping, he argued, is rapidly becoming the spatial intelligence layer through which governments, enterprises and intelligent machines understand and make decisions about the real world. Malik pointed specifically to the rise of physical AI, the class of AI systems that operate in and interact with real environments, as the reason this transition matters now. Such systems, he noted, need more than algorithms, they require accurate, three-dimensional and continuously updated models of their surroundings, and Genesys has spent years building the survey infrastructure and digital twin capabilities to supply exactly that.
That is a genuinely interesting repositioning for a company whose core competency has been terrestrial and aerial surveying, high-definition mapping and city-scale digital twins. The bet Genesys is making is that this foundation, once combined with AI-native technology architecture capable of continuously ingesting, processing, validating and interpreting spatial data, becomes something far more valuable than static maps, an intelligence layer that autonomous systems, urban planners and enterprises can actually query and act on.
Basu Ray himself echoed that framing, describing the opportunity as bringing together AI, digital engineering and platform thinking to transform Genesys’ geospatial content, survey capabilities and 3D digital twins into a scalable spatial intelligence layer. He said he was looking forward to building technology that enables governments, enterprises and intelligent machines to better perceive, understand and respond to the physical world, positioning Genesys at the forefront of what he called the emerging physical AI ecosystem.
The broader logic here is sound. Conventional AI has largely been trained on text and images, a world of digital abstraction. Physical AI needs something else entirely, a genuine understanding of three-dimensional space, how objects and infrastructure relate to one another, and how environments change over time. Few Indian companies have spent as long building the underlying survey and mapping infrastructure as Genesys has, which gives it a plausible head start if it can pair that data advantage with the right technical leadership. Hiring a CTO with Basu Ray’s specific mix of AI, robotics and large-scale platform experience suggests Genesys understands that the hard part now is not collecting more geospatial data, but building the intelligence layer on top of it that autonomous systems and enterprise customers will actually pay for.
