MUMBAI: The Raj is back, but this time it is shopping. Flipkart has turned the phrase “British Raj” on its head for a playful Independence Day campaign promoting its Freedom Sale.
Created in partnership with 22feet, part of Omnicom Advertising India, the campaign takes a cheeky detour through one of the most familiar phrases associated with India’s colonial history, turning it into a digital activation built around wordplay.
The idea is simple. Instead of taking aim at the historical British Raj, Flipkart is targeting people named Raj who live in the UK.
As part of the activation, the brand is dropping Freedom Sale discount codes in the comments sections of their Instagram posts, giving the phrase “British Raj” an unexpected modern interpretation.
The campaign is designed around the shopping buzz that builds around Independence Day, when consumers typically look for deals and discounts. Flipkart uses the wordplay to create a conversation that connects the national occasion with its sale proposition.
A humorous film brings the idea to life, opening with witty one-liners and visual gags that play on references to the historical British Raj. The film then delivers the punchline by revealing that the campaign is about a British Raj, not the British Raj.
The activation extends across digital, social media and out-of-home (OOH) platforms. QR codes across the campaign direct audiences to the film while inviting them to join the hunt for Freedom Sale discount codes.
