Duolingo cries ‘my SEO’ as Apple’s iPhone Duo enters the foldable game
The iPhone Duo name sparks an SEO panic for Duolingo and fresh Samsung jabs
NEW DELHI: Apple may have folded a new phone, but it also managed to unfold a fresh round of brand banter online.
The launch of Apple’s first foldable iPhone, dubbed the iPhone Duo, prompted playful reactions from Duolingo and rival Samsung on X, turning what was expected to be a major hardware announcement into an unexpected social media showdown.
Duolingo was quick to react after Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event, where the company introduced the iPhone Duo. The language-learning platform joked that it hoped its brand would not be infringed upon.
The company’s mascot, Duo the owl, appeared particularly unhappy with Apple’s choice of name.
“it’s called the iPhone WHAT???” Duolingo posted, followed shortly by another message: “oh god oh god my SEO my SEO”.
The concern was tongue-in-cheek, but the joke landed on a real digital marketing issue. With Apple’s new device now competing for search attention around the word “Duo”, Duolingo’s well-established mascot and brand could find itself sharing more of the search spotlight.
Duolingo then took its mock complaint straight to Apple’s leadership.
Tagging John Ternus, the company posted: “pick up the phone pls”.
It later tagged tech personality iJustine, asking for help in its increasingly dramatic attempt to get Apple’s attention.
The sequence turned the mascot into the protagonist of its own mini-drama, with Duolingo effectively playing the role of a brand manager discovering that a tech giant had just adopted a name closely associated with its most recognisable character.
The humour also fits Duolingo’s established social media style, where the brand regularly uses its green owl mascot to react to major pop-culture and technology moments.
Duolingo was not alone in having a little fun at Apple’s expense.
Samsung Electronics, which has been selling foldable smartphones for years, jumped into the conversation with a post aimed at Duolingo.
“I’m so sorry, @DuoLingo. They copied us too #Solidarity,” Samsung Mobile US posted.
The message was a cheeky reference to Apple’s arrival in a category Samsung helped popularise with its Galaxy Fold range.
Samsung followed up with another pointed post, writing: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers”.
The remarks revived one of the oldest talking points around Apple’s foldable launch: while the iPhone Duo represents a new product category for Apple, foldable smartphones are hardly new to the wider mobile industry.
Samsung launched its first Galaxy Fold in 2019 and has since released multiple generations of foldable devices. Google, Motorola and Chinese smartphone makers including Honor, Oppo and Huawei have also developed foldable phones.
That timing has made Apple’s entry into foldables a natural target for rival brands and technology watchers.
Apple’s reputation for redefining established product categories means the company has arrived with considerable attention despite entering a market where competitors have already spent years refining the technology.
The iPhone Duo, however, gives Apple something its rivals cannot easily replicate: the enormous reach of the iPhone brand and Apple’s tightly integrated hardware and software ecosystem.
For Duolingo, meanwhile, the unexpected naming collision has provided a rather useful marketing moment of its own. What began as an apparent “SEO panic” quickly became a viral brand interaction, with Samsung joining the conversation and social media users adding their own jokes.
Apple may have wanted the iPhone Duo to make waves in the smartphone market. For now, it is also making waves in the meme market.
