MUMBAI: Financial technology is finally turning bullion into a digital heavy hitter, though its biggest test remains winning over reluctant investors.

The global digital gold market is on course to swell to between $160 billion and $170 billion by 2031, up sharply from its current $45 billion to $55 billion footprint, according to a joint study by the World Gold Council and Boston Consulting Group.Pacing along at a projected 27 per cent annual growth rate in its base case, the market could even surge to $280 billion under optimal conditions. If industry bottlenecks remain stubbornly unaddressed, however, growth will cap out at a modest $70 billion to $80 billion.

Unlocking the sector’s ultimate potential requires tackling four core pain points: trust, access, pricing, and product utility. Should the industry succeed, the report posits that up to $700 billion in latent demand could be unleashed, bringing digital gold on par with physically backed gold exchange-traded funds.

Drawing on a survey of over 12,000 retail investors across 12 global markets alongside 20 expert interviews, the findings expose a vast gap between public enthusiasm and actual capital commitment. Nearly nine out of ten respondents expressed readiness to buy digital gold, proving that demand is not the problem; conversion is.

Four in five investors cited provider credibility as their primary hurdle, with 35 per cent demanding clearer regulatory guardrails and 33 per cent seeking verifiable proof of physical vault backing. Distribution channels also proved decisive: penetration rates soared sevenfold in regions where banking applications and mainstream payment apps offer seamless access. India already leads the charge, boasting over 120 million consumers who have transacted in digital gold.

Crucially, digital gold promises to expand the pie rather than cannibalise existing channels, with roughly 65 per cent of fresh demand originating from individuals who currently hold no physical bullion or exchange-traded funds.

If market architects can seamlessly blend digital flexibility with ironclad regulation and physical redemption, the ancient safe haven will secure a golden era on modern balance sheets.
