Delhi High Court restrains NBFC from using Zepto and Zepto Finance trademarks
Interim order bars use of disputed branding and domain transfer in trademark infringement suit
NEW DELHI: Zepto has secured interim relief in its trademark battle with a non-banking financial company after the Delhi High Court temporarily restrained Naman Finlease and its directors from using the names ‘Zepto’ and ‘Zepto Finance’ for their lending business.
The ad interim order was passed by Justice Jyoti Singh in a trademark infringement suit filed by Zepto, which argued that it is the registered proprietor of the “ZEPTO” word and device marks.
According to the plea, the company discovered that the defendants were operating a lending business under the name “Zepto Finance” after it began receiving legal notices and court summons that were intended for the NBFC.
Zepto also informed the court that it offers financial services through ZeptoCash, a digital wallet with an in-app UPI facility launched in June 2025, and argued that its brand enjoys significant market recognition beyond the classes in which its trademarks are registered.
The company contended that the similarity between the marks had resulted in actual consumer confusion. It pointed to a civil suit filed in Chennai in which a borrower sought recovery of a loan allegedly disbursed by “Zepto Finance”, but the court summons carried Zepto’s corporate address.
The court was also informed that the defendants do not hold a registered trademark for either “Zepto” or “Zepto Finance”, although a trademark application is pending.
After considering the submissions, the court restrained the defendants from using the disputed marks until further orders. It also directed that the domain name zeptofinance.com should not be transferred to any entity associated with the defendants during the pendency of the proceedings.
The matter has been listed before the Joint Registrar on 21 August, while the application seeking interim relief will next be heard by the court on 30 November.
