Claudia Johnson named chief solutions officer, integrated commerce at Omnicom Media

A 15-year eCommerce lifer swaps a single-agency badge for a seat astride two, betting that integration beats specialisation

NEW YORK: Claudia Johnson has just landed the title of chief solutions officer, integrated commerce at Omnicom Media, and the appointment tells a story bigger than one executive’s promotion. It signals where Omnicom wants its sprawling commerce empire to go: fewer silos, more cross-pollination, and a single voice speaking for both Omni, its AI-driven marketing intelligence platform, and Flywheel, the commerce network it absorbed. Johnson herself was quick to frame the move not as an exit but as a merger of loyalties, insisting she remains close to colleagues on both teams even as her business card changes.

The appointment caps a steady, unglamorous climb rather than a meteoric leap. Johnson spent seven years at Flywheel, rising from senior vice-president of partnership acceleration to chief client officer, then technical advisor to the chief executive, a role in which she translated client demands into product decisions across Omnicom’s Omni platform. Before Flywheel she cut her teeth at Kimberly-Clark, running eCommerce capability for its family and adult-care brands across EMEA, and earlier still at Target, where she helped shepherd the retailer’s website off Amazon’s platform, a migration still cited as a case study in retail independence.

What makes Johnson’s trajectory instructive is its breadth rather than its speed. Few executives in commerce media can claim direct operating experience in supply chain, inventory planning, product information management and client advisory work, all before turning to strategy. That range matters now because integrated commerce, the buzzy phrase in her new title, demands exactly this kind of generalist fluency. Brands no longer want a media buyer here and a supply-chain consultant there; they want one team that can move from shelf content to sales performance without handing the client off between departments.

Omnicom’s own commerce push has been assembled through acquisition, most notably its absorption of Flywheel, and stitching such pieces together is never simply an org-chart exercise. Promoting an insider who has already worked both sides, Flywheel’s operations and Omnicom’s advisory function, is a low-risk way to accelerate that integration. It also sends a signal to clients jittery about post-merger reshuffles: continuity of relationship, even as titles evolve.

None of this guarantees smooth sailing. Integrated commerce is a crowded pitch, contested by holding companies, retail-media networks and Amazon’s own advertising arm, all chasing the same budgets. Johnson’s task will be to prove that a combined Omni-Flywheel offering delivers measurably better results than the sum of its parts, not merely a tidier org chart. For now, though, her promotion reads as a vote of confidence, both in her and in Omnicom’s bet that commerce and media, long treated as separate disciplines, are converging for good.
