Chinmayee Rout moves to EssenceMediacom, to lead Google India media planning
The WPP Media media planner steps up to manager, business media planning, after a run steering global giants’ digital campaigns
DELHI: Media planning in India just got a new name to watch. Chinmayee Rout, who spent over two years cutting her teeth on some of the world’s biggest advertisers at WPP Media, has moved to EssenceMediacom India as business manager, integrated media planning, taking charge of the Google India business. For someone whose career so far reads like a highlight reel of blue-chip clients, the jump from Coca-Cola to Google is less a pivot than a natural next step.
Rout’s stint at WPP Media was a steady climb rather than a lucky break. She joined as an intern in digital media planning in May 2024, before moving up to executive, digital media planning that July, working the Coca-Cola Company and Google APAC accounts at what was then still known as GroupM. By November 2025, she had been promoted to senior executive, business media planning, adding Google Gemini to her client roster alongside Coca-Cola. Two years, three promotions and a client list most planners twice her seniority would envy; that is not a bad scorecard for someone still building the foundations of a career.
What makes the move interesting is the breadth behind it. Long before media planning entered the picture, Rout was cutting her teeth in content and SEO, first as an editorial intern at Press Trust of India in 2019, then as a digital marketing intern at ET BrandEquity, and later as marketing and social media executive at AmberStudent, a student housing platform, between 2021 and 2022. That grounding in content, search and social gives her a fuller picture of how campaigns actually land with audiences, rather than just how they are booked and billed, a combination that is increasingly prized as media planning and content strategy blur into each other.
The EssenceMediacom move also says something about how the WPP Media stable operates: talent tends to be rotated and elevated across its network agencies rather than lost to rivals, and Rout’s shift from WPP Media to sister agency EssenceMediacom, both under the same holding structure, fits that pattern. Handling Google’s India business is no small mandate either; it demands the kind of platform fluency and operational discipline that comes from having spent years inside the media buying machinery for a client like Coca-Cola. If her trajectory so far is any indication, Rout looks set to bring exactly that discipline to bigger campaigns and, as she herself hopes, better click-through rates.
