MUMBAI: Puneet Datta is adding a new lens to his leadership portfolio without putting down the one he already carries. Canon India has elevated its long-serving executive to the role of Chief Communications Officer (CCO), a position he will hold alongside his existing responsibilities as Senior Director with full profit and loss ownership. The move places both brand storytelling and business performance under one leadership umbrella, reflecting the growing convergence of communications and commercial strategy.

Announcing the development, Datta described the dual role as less about balancing competing responsibilities and more about pursuing a common objective, building a business and a brand that earn trust from customers, partners and employees alike.

The expanded mandate comes after a career spanning more than two decades at Canon India. Datta joined the company in September 2004 as manager, channel marketing and enterprise solution partners, and has steadily climbed the ranks through a series of leadership roles across sales and marketing.

Over the years, he served as Senior Manager-Marketing (2007–2009), Assistant Director-Marketing (2010), Assistant Director-Sales & Marketing (2011–2012), Director-Sales & Marketing (2013–2018), before being elevated to Senior Director in 2019. In January 2026, he added the Chief Communications Officer title to his portfolio, marking another milestone in a tenure that now stretches nearly 22 years.

Before joining Canon, Datta held leadership positions at Emerson Network Power between 2000 and 2004, including Regional Manager-North and Sales Manager-West. He began his professional journey at Ricoh India, where he worked between 1996 and 1999 in dealer sales and support roles.

The appointment signals Canon India’s increasing emphasis on aligning corporate communications with broader business objectives at a time when reputation, stakeholder engagement and brand trust are becoming critical growth drivers.

Datta’s unique position at the intersection of commerce and communication also reflects a wider shift in corporate leadership structures, where executives are increasingly expected to bridge operational performance and narrative building rather than treat them as separate functions.

Armed with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Pune University and further studies in marketing at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, Datta now finds himself steering two of the company’s most important conversations, one with the market and the other with the balance sheet.

For Canon India, the message is clear: when business strategy and brand strategy speak the same language, the story tends to come into sharper focus.
