MUMBAI: Media agency reshuffles rarely make for gripping reading, but this one is worth a pause. Bhushan Bagkar has stepped into the role of vice president, strategy, at WPP Media, marking a month into the job and, by most accounts, a natural next chapter for someone who has spent the better part of a decade and a half building his craft inside one of India’s most storied agency networks.

Bagkar’s move comes after more than three and a half years at Madison World, where he rose from deputy general manager to general manager, steering media strategy, planning and buying for a client roster spanning textiles, personal care, snacks, adhesives and airlines. Before that stint, a year at Wavemaker as business director rounded out a resume built almost entirely within the Madison stable, where he spent close to a decade across account management, planning and strategy functions, working on marquee names such as Raymond, DHFL and Sheth Creators.

What stands out is the breadth. Bagkar has handled portfolios worth over Rs 300 crore, delivered a spotless pitch-win record through the pandemic years, and cut his teeth even earlier at Prachar Communications, working accounts across FMCG, apparel, stationery and financial services. That is the kind of ground-level grounding that tends to produce strategists who understand budgets as much as they understand brand-building, a combination WPP Media will no doubt be keen to put to work.

The appointment also fits a broader pattern in Indian media agencies, where senior strategy roles are increasingly being filled by leaders who have spent years inside integrated, homegrown networks rather than parachuting in from global holding companies. Bagkar’s WPP Media stint begins in Mumbai, on-site, and by his own account, he is already energised by the challenges and the team around him.

For a media strategy leader who describes himself as focused on ROI, budget stewardship and value-driven partnerships, this looks like a logical, well-earned step up, and one worth watching as WPP Media continues to build out its strategy bench in India.
