Ananya Birla updates her LinkedIn, formally announces taking over as founder and chairperson of Birla Studios
The Aditya Birla scion, singer and serial founder has formally taken over as founder and chairperson of Birla Studios, a multi-language cinema bet launched back in February
MUMBAI: Most people update LinkedIn the day a new job begins. Ananya Birla has waited seven months to formally announce that she has taken over as founder and chairperson of Birla Studios, a film studio built around high-concept commercial cinema, a delay that says less about the venture and rather more about how many other things she has had going on in the meantime.
Birla Studios itself launched in February 2026 and is already building a genuinely ambitious slate, spanning Hindi, Gujarati and Malayalam alongside other regional languages, as well as international English-language cinema. That is a wide canvas for a studio barely seven months old, and it suggests the ambition here is pan-Indian at minimum, with a global lens layered on top.
The film venture sits alongside another February appointment, founder and chairperson at Birla AI Labs, pointing to a deliberate double bet on content and technology within the same fortnight. Both roles sit atop a business portfolio that already spans microfinance, cosmetics, global trading, real estate and diversified manufacturing, making Birla Studios less a career pivot and more the newest entry in a conglomerate-in-miniature she has been quietly assembling for over a decade.
The finance and industrial side of that portfolio is not incidental. Birla holds board positions as director at Hindalco Industries, Grasim Industries and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, alongside a non-executive director role at Aditya Birla Management Corporation, the group’s apex holding structure. She also promotes and leads Aditya Birla Global Trading, formerly Swiss Singapore, and Birla Estates, giving her direct operating stakes rather than purely ceremonial board seats across some of the group’s largest listed entities.
Her entrepreneurial record predates all of this. Birla founded Svatantra Microfin in 2012, now one of India’s larger microfinance institutions, and has since built out Svatantra Micro Housing Finance Corporation and Chaitanya India Fin Credit, a wholly owned subsidiary of Svatantra Microfin, giving her a genuinely deep financial inclusion stack rather than a single flagship company. On the consumer side, Birla Cosmetics, founded in February 2025, has already launched two brands, Contraband and LOVETC, adding a beauty and personal care play to a resume that already ran fairly wide. Ikai Asai, her design and crafts venture founded in 2020, and the Ananya Birla Foundation round out a portfolio that blends commerce with social impact in roughly equal measure.
And then there is the music, which for most executives would be the entire headline. Birla has been a singer-songwriter since 2016, first with Universal Music Group and now with BMG, and spent close to eighteen months as brand ambassador for Maybelline New York through 2024, an unusual crossover of pop career and beauty endorsement that few business leaders anywhere could claim. Taken together, the LinkedIn update is less a career announcement and more a footnote to a decade of empire building conducted largely without fanfare, with Birla Studios now the venture to watch as its multi-language slate takes shape.
