Amber Enterprises to start smartphone production for Oppo, OnePlus, Realme
Trial runs are planned for Q4 FY27, with commercial production targeted for Q1 FY28
MUMBAI: Amber is getting ready to put a new phone line in its portfolio. Electronics manufacturing services firm Amber Enterprises India is preparing to enter smartphone manufacturing, with trial production planned for Q4 FY27 and commercial operations expected to begin in Q1 FY28.
The company will manufacture smartphones for Oppo, OnePlus and Realme through its collaboration with Oppo Mobiles India, the licensed manufacturer in India for the three brands, according to PTI.
Amber Executive Chairman, CEO and Whole-time Director Jasbir Singh said the company expects to produce around 8 million smartphones in its first year. It plans to scale production in phases, with annual output projected to reach 15 million to 16 million units in the second year.
The company has also appointed a chief operating officer for its mobile business as it builds the new vertical.
The move gives Amber a foothold in one of India’s largest consumer electronics categories, with the Oppo group already commanding a sizeable share of the market.
According to Counterpoint Research figures cited by PTI, Vivo held 17.8 per cent of India’s smartphone market by sales volume in Q2 2026, followed by Samsung at 17.6 per cent and Oppo at 13.6 per cent.
Taken together, Vivo and Oppo group brands, including iQoo, Realme and OnePlus, accounted for 45.6 per cent of the Indian smartphone market during the quarter.
Amber had announced its manufacturing agreement with Oppo Mobiles India in June, marking its expansion beyond its existing electronics manufacturing operations into mobile phones.
While the smartphone business offers a new growth avenue, Amber is also dealing with margin pressure in its bare printed circuit board business because of rising copper-clad laminate costs.
Singh said the company has been passing higher input costs on to customers, although with a time lag. He attributed the continued increase in copper-clad laminate prices partly to demand from AI and data centre infrastructure, along with material shortages.
To reduce its dependence on external supplies, Amber expects to establish its own copper-clad laminate plant by 2029-30.
For now, the immediate focus is getting the mobile manufacturing line ready: trial production in Q4 FY27, commercial output in Q1 FY28, and a planned jump from 8 million phones in year one to as many as 16 million in year two.
