Akshay Dhody promoted to senior director at Dentsu India

A decade inside the Dentsu network, from management trainee to media planning leadership, culminates in a corner office promotion

SOUTH DELHI: Akshay Dhody has just been handed the senior director, media planning tag at Dentsu India, and the promotion is less a surprise than the natural conclusion of a career that has barely left the building in ten years. Dhody joined the wider Dentsu network as a management trainee at Mediabrands back in 2016 and has spent almost every year since climbing steadily through it, a rare thing in an industry known for restless job hopping.

The trajectory is instructive precisely because of how linear it is. From management trainee, Dhody moved to business manager within a year, then spent close to four years as senior business manager at dentsu X, followed by promotions to group head and associate business director, before stepping up to business director in July last year. That is six distinct promotions across roughly a decade at essentially one organisation, a pace that suggests consistent performance rather than any single lucky break. Media planning careers often stall at the mid-manager level while agencies chase lateral hires for senior roles; Dhody’s path is a reminder that internal progression, done consistently, still works.

What the promotion signals for Dentsu India is arguably more interesting than what it means for Dhody individually. Elevating someone who has grown up entirely inside the network’s Delhi and Gurugram operations into a senior media planning leadership role suggests the agency is choosing continuity and institutional knowledge over an external hire at a moment when media planning itself, squeezed between programmatic complexity and client cost pressure, rewards exactly that kind of depth. A decade of watching how dentsu X’s business actually works, from the ground up, is not easily replicated by a lateral hire parachuted in from outside.

For an industry that talks constantly about talent retention as its biggest headache, Dhody’s decade-long climb is close to a case study in how to do it right. Senior director roles in media planning increasingly demand both strategic range and granular operational memory, and Dentsu India has just promoted someone who has spent his entire career acquiring both inside its own walls. That is a quietly reassuring story for an agency network navigating a tougher advertising market than the one Dhody joined in 2016.
