ABD takes Officer’s Choice Blue local with Malaysia production launch
The co-bottling model marks ABD’s first overseas local production venture
MUMBAI: Allied Blenders and Distillers (ABD) is giving its global ambitions a local twist, announcing the launch of local production of Officer’s Choice Blue in Malaysia through an asset-light co-bottling arrangement.
The move marks ABD’s first overseas local production partnership and is aimed at strengthening its international growth strategy while limiting the need for significant capital investment.
ABD, one of India’s leading spirits companies and the country’s largest spirits exporter by volume, currently exports to 39 international markets. Its international footprint has more than doubled over the past two years, with operations spanning the GCC, Africa, North America, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Under the Malaysia arrangement, ABD will work with an established local partner to produce and distribute Officer’s Choice Blue. The whisky will be available in 750ml, 180ml and 90ml formats, covering different consumer occasions and price points.
The company said it may introduce additional brands under the model depending on market response and the readiness of distribution channels. It also plans to assess similar local production partnerships in other international markets.
Capital-light global push
The Malaysia expansion is part of ABD’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in core export markets, expand its distribution network in Africa and build a stronger presence across Southeast Asia.
The co-bottling model allows the company to enter and scale in overseas markets more quickly without making large upfront investments in manufacturing infrastructure. ABD will continue to retain control over raw materials, packaging inputs, quality standards and brand stewardship.
The spirits market in Malaysia is expected to grow at a mid-teens rate in the coming years, adding to the appeal of the market for ABD as it looks to expand its international business.
Allied Blenders and Distillers managing director Amar Sinha said the company’s international business is being built around a disciplined, asset-light approach that combines market expansion with capital efficiency.
He added that local production in Malaysia was an important milestone, with Officer’s Choice Blue giving ABD an opportunity to serve consumers while improving market agility and efficiency.
The company said it will continue to focus on expanding exports, deepening distribution in priority markets and scaling its portfolio in a measured and profitable manner.
With Malaysia becoming its first overseas local production base, ABD is betting that a lighter manufacturing footprint can help its Indian brands travel further without making the global journey unnecessarily expensive.
