App and website will close on November 3 as content moves to partner platforms

MUMBAI: Discovery+ is discovering an exit route from India’s standalone streaming market, with Warner Bros Discovery set to shut the platform’s app and website in the country and shift its content towards partner services.

From September 3, users in India can no longer purchase new discovery+ subscriptions either directly from Warner Bros Discovery or through third-party providers. The app will be discontinued on November 3, 2026, bringing the platform’s direct-to-consumer run in the market to a close.

For existing subscribers, the exit will happen in stages. Monthly subscribers will see auto-renewals stop from October 3, while access will continue until the end of their current billing period.

Annual subscribers whose plans expire between October 3 and November 3 will retain access until their existing subscriptions end, but their plans will not be renewed. Those with annual subscriptions running beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused portion after the app shuts down.

The content itself, however, is not disappearing. Discovery+ programming will remain available in India through partner platforms including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV.

That effectively changes the streaming strategy from a standalone destination to a distribution model built around larger platforms and aggregators. Warner Bros Discovery has not specified how individual shows and films will be packaged or positioned across these partner services.

The move also reflects a wider rethink underway across streaming, as media companies reassess the economics of running individual platforms and increasingly look towards partnerships and aggregation to reach viewers.

For Indian subscribers, therefore, the content stays on the menu but the discovery+ signboard is coming down.
