Warner Bros Discovery to shut standalone discovery+ app in India on November 3

MUMBAI: The discovery is out: Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down the standalone discovery+ app and website in India, ending the platform’s standalone operations in the market.

From September 3, users in India can no longer purchase a new discovery+ subscription through Warner Bros. Discovery or third-party providers. The app will be discontinued on November 3, 2026.

The shutdown will affect subscribers differently depending on their billing cycle.

For monthly subscribers, auto-renewals will stop from October 3. Users will continue to have access until the end of their current billing period, after which their subscriptions will end.

Annual subscribers whose current billing period ends between October 3 and November 3 will also retain access until their existing subscription expires, but their plans will not be renewed.

Subscribers whose annual billing period runs beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused portion of their subscription following the app’s closure.

The company has also outlined where viewers will be able to watch discovery+ content after the standalone service shuts down. Its shows and films will be available through partner platforms including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV.

The move effectively shifts discovery+ content from a standalone direct-to-consumer model towards distribution through partner platforms in India. Warner Bros. Discovery has not specified in its update how individual shows and films will be packaged or positioned across these services.

The shutdown comes as global media companies continue to rethink standalone streaming businesses and explore ways to distribute content through larger, increasingly consolidated platforms.

For discovery+ subscribers in India, however, the message is simpler: the standalone app has an expiry date, and November 3 is it.
