MUMBAI: One phone call can turn a life upside down, and in Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story, the real crime begins when fear does the talking. Chak De! India star Vidya Malavade makes her microdrama debut with Story TV’s latest thriller, which takes on the increasingly concerning phenomenon of digital arrest scams. Also starring Pratik Sehajpal and Vineet Raina, the series is streaming exclusively on the Story TV app.

Produced by Small Town Boys and directed by Alok Sharma, the microdrama follows Priya Sharma, played by Malavade, a working professional whose life unravels after she falls victim to a sophisticated scam. What begins with a call from someone posing as a government official soon becomes a frightening ordeal involving fake identities, intimidation and threats. But as Priya discovers that she is not the only person caught in the network’s web, her personal crisis takes a larger turn, setting her on a path to fight back.

For Malavade, known for playing determined women, the role offered a different kind of battle. Rather than facing opponents on a sporting field, Priya must confront a system designed to exploit trust and manufacture panic. The actor said the character’s vulnerability was what made the story particularly unsettling, because even educated and cautious people can fall prey to such fraud.

“I have played women who fight on a field, as the last line of defence. What frightened me most while playing Priya was realising she could be any of us. Our parents. Our neighbours,” Malavade said.

She added that Priya is educated and careful, yet still loses everything in a single afternoon. The concern, she said, is even greater for people who are less familiar with the digital world. Malavade hopes the story will encourage viewers to pause before responding to suspicious calls.

The project also marks a change of course for the actor, who said she had stayed away from microdramas until the subject caught her attention. The format’s ability to reach viewers directly on their phones was another draw, particularly given that smartphones are also where many such scams begin.

The series places Bigg Boss 15 runner-up Pratik Sehajpal on the other side of the law as Vicky Mandal, the man behind the scam network. His character represents the organised machinery of deception that uses urgency and fear to cloud victims’ judgement.

“Playing the person behind the crime forced me to understand how cold and organised this world really is. These are not lone tricksters; they are factories built to break your judgment in ninety seconds,” Sehajpal said.

The actor said he wanted audiences to hate Vicky, arguing that recognising the behaviour of such characters could help viewers identify real-life scammers. He also described microdramas as an emerging entertainment format, citing his experience working on the Story TV production.

Vineet Raina plays Raj Thakur, a suspended officer who joins the fight against the network. His character brings another dimension to the story, representing the individuals who continue to pursue wrongdoing despite facing professional setbacks.

“Raj is a man who was punished for doing his job right. There are real officers fighting this quietly, and I salute them,” Raina said.

The cast also includes Sandeep Aurora as Anand, alongside Priyanshi Tripathi, Puja Jha, Ayushi Tyagi, Shital Tejwani, Ashok K Jha and Yogesh Pawar.

The story arrives against the backdrop of substantial reported cyber fraud losses in India. Figures cited at a government-organised cyber-safety workshop put the country’s reported cyber fraud losses at Rs 22,495 crore in 2025, while cybercrime complaints reached 28.15 lakh, approximately 24 per cent higher than the previous year.

Against this backdrop, Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story uses fiction to draw attention to the tactics associated with digital arrest scams. These include impersonating government or law enforcement officials, presenting counterfeit documents and pressuring victims into making decisions before they have time to question the claims being made against them.

The premise also highlights a central difficulty in tackling such fraud: scammers do not always rely on sophisticated technology alone. By impersonating authority figures and creating a sense of immediate danger, they can push victims into acting out of fear rather than checking whether a demand is genuine.

For Story TV, the release adds a crime thriller with a contemporary subject to its microdrama slate. For Malavade, it marks an entry into a format built around short-form, mobile-first storytelling. Whether the series can turn its real-world relevance into sustained viewer interest remains to be seen, but its subject gives the drama stakes that extend beyond the screen.

Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story is now streaming exclusively on the Story TV app.
