MUMBAI: Looks like the humble SMS is being left on read. Businesses now want conversations that do more than just arrive, they want them to engage. Truecaller and conversational messaging platform Gupshup have entered into a strategic partnership to expand the reach of Truecaller Business Messaging across India and several international markets, as both companies look to accelerate the shift from traditional SMS to richer business communications.

The collaboration will see Gupshup offer Truecaller Business Messaging to enterprises in India, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and other global markets, giving brands access to verified, media-rich conversations within the Truecaller ecosystem.

The move reflects a broader transformation in business-to-consumer communication, where companies are increasingly looking beyond plain-text messages to deliver more interactive and trustworthy customer experiences.

At the heart of the offering is Truecaller’s verified business messaging capability, which displays a company’s name, logo and green verification badge alongside messages. The feature is designed to help businesses stand out in crowded inboxes while reducing the risk of communications being ignored or mistaken for spam.

The platform also allows brands to move beyond the traditional 160-character SMS format by incorporating images, videos, invoices, boarding passes and other rich-media content directly into conversations.

For users, the experience is designed to be more action-oriented. One-tap call-to-action features enable tasks such as copying OTPs, tracking orders, completing web check-ins and accessing important updates with fewer steps.

The service also supports sticky notifications, which keep time-sensitive messages such as OTPs, travel alerts and service updates visible at the top of conversations for quicker access.

The partnership comes as enterprises increasingly seek communication channels that can support the entire customer journey, from secure authentication and transactional updates to payments, feedback collection and customer engagement.

By combining Gupshup’s enterprise reach with Truecaller’s communication infrastructure, the two companies are positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the rapidly evolving business messaging market.

As brands continue searching for ways to cut through digital clutter, the message from Truecaller and Gupshup is clear, the future of customer communication may be less about sending messages and more about starting conversations.
