Spider-Noir cancelled after one season despite Amazon-Sony TV deal continuing
Nicolas Cage-led Marvel series was the first project from the partnership to reach screens
MUMBAI: The noir has gone dark. Spider-Noir, the Nicolas Cage-led live-action series from Prime Video and MGM+, has been cancelled after its first season and will not return for another instalment, according to Deadline.
The series was the second project ordered and the first to reach screens under a multi-title partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, based on intellectual property from Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters.
The partnership’s first planned series, the Silk: Spider Society, was ultimately scrapped before reaching screens.
Despite the cancellation of Spider-Noir, the wider Amazon-Sony television partnership remains active. The companies are continuing to develop several projects, with one reportedly nearing a series order. Details of the project are being kept under wraps.
Under the arrangement, projects receive a linear debut on MGM+ before subsequently becoming available to stream on Prime Video.
Based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir, the live-action series followed Ben Reilly, played by Cage, as a veteran private investigator struggling in 1930s New York. A personal tragedy forces him to confront his past as he takes on the role of the city’s only superhero.
The cast also included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.
Amazon had been expected to assess the performance of Spider-Noir before deciding the future of other projects under the partnership. While the series will not continue, the ongoing development slate signals that the cancellation has not brought the broader Amazon-Sony collaboration to an end.
