MUMBAI: Game over isn’t usually part of the development plan, but at Bungie, the reset button has been pressed once again. Sony-owned game developer Bungie has announced another round of layoffs as part of a broader restructuring exercise, with teams behind Destiny and Marathon bearing the brunt as the studio recalibrates its priorities amid mounting pressure in the live-service gaming market.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) confirmed that the workforce reductions affect significant portions of the Destiny team, parts of the Marathon development team and several Sony employees supporting Bungie’s operations.

The move marks the third round of layoffs since Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, highlighting the challenges of sustaining large-scale live-service game development in an increasingly competitive market.

The restructuring was announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst who described the decision as difficult but necessary to better align Bungie’s resources with its long-term strategy. He said the company explored multiple alternatives before opting for job cuts following an extensive review of the studio’s operational priorities and future development roadmap.

The latest cuts come at a pivotal moment for Bungie. The studio recently brought nearly a decade of Destiny 2 development to a close with its final content update released earlier this month. According to media reports, the franchise had struggled to meet internal expectations in recent years, prompting a broader reassessment of resources.

Bungie’s newer live-service title, Marathon, has also faced a difficult start, reportedly struggling to gain meaningful traction following its launch. Despite the setbacks, Sony has reaffirmed that the title remains part of its long-term gaming portfolio.

The repeated restructuring reflects broader headwinds facing the live-service gaming industry, where rising development costs, evolving player expectations and fierce competition have made sustaining long-term success increasingly difficult even for established studios.

Sony said affected employees will receive transition support, including assistance with redeployment opportunities across its wider gaming network. Meanwhile, Bungie will continue developing its future projects as it reshapes its workforce and operational structure.

The latest round of layoffs also raises fresh questions about Bungie’s future within Sony’s gaming ecosystem. With Destiny 2 winding down and Marathon yet to establish itself, the studio now faces the task of rebuilding momentum while proving it can still deliver the blockbuster live-service experiences that once made it one of gaming’s most influential developers.
