Primetime Emmys move to Prime Video in six year streaming deal

Amazon streamer becomes exclusive home from 2027 as awards leave broadcast TV

MUMBAI: The Emmys are changing channels, and this time there is no remote needed. The Television Academy and Prime Video have signed a six-year deal that will make the Amazon-owned streamer the exclusive home of the Primetime Emmys from 2027 through 2032, taking television’s biggest awards show into a streaming-only era.

The 2027 ceremony will be the first time in the Emmys’ 79-year history that the awards will not air on a traditional broadcast outlet. It will also make the Emmys the first of the four major EGOT awards Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys to become exclusive to a streaming platform.

Importantly, Prime Video will make the Emmy telecast available to everyone, whether they subscribe to Prime or not. The Television Academy has positioned that free access as a key part of the agreement, meaning the move to streaming will not put the ceremony behind a paywall.

One partner instead of a yearly handover

The deal marks a major departure from the Emmys’ long-running broadcast arrangement. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC have rotated the Primetime Emmys under a “wheel” arrangement in its current form since the mid-1990s, with each network taking its turn to air the ceremony.

The awards had previously spent six consecutive years on Fox from 1987 to 1992, followed by two years on ABC in 1993 and 1994 before the four-network rotation began.

That latest broadcast deal ended with the 2026 ceremony, which aired on NBC and Peacock. Reports that the Television Academy and Prime Video were discussing a new arrangement emerged the day after this year’s ceremony.

Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said the move was an opportunity to rethink the model rather than simply renew the existing arrangement. He pointed to continuity as one of the major attractions of having a single partner for six years instead of moving between the four broadcast networks.

According to Abrego, the annual rotation meant that the Academy was effectively starting over with a new partner each year, from bringing in producers to developing creative plans and building relationships with brands.

The global streaming advantage

Prime Video’s global footprint was another major factor in the agreement. While the Emmys have historically worked with international broadcast partners, the prospect of having the awards available through one global streaming platform added to the appeal.

The arrangement gives Prime Video the opportunity to carry the ceremony internationally while giving the Television Academy a single long-term streaming partner. The platform may also carry other Television Academy programming, including the Television Academy Hall of Fame and Television Academy Honors ceremony.

The future of the Creative Arts Emmys remains less settled. Those ceremonies have aired on FXX for more than a decade, and discussions over their future televised home are still under way.

Streaming makes its EGOT breakthrough

The move is also significant beyond the Emmys themselves. The awards are now set to become the first EGOT event to be exclusive to a streaming platform.

The Oscars are also preparing for a move to YouTube, but that transition will not happen until the 2029 ceremony. ABC retains rights to the 2027 and 2028 Oscars, meaning the Emmys will get there first.

The shift reflects the changing economics and audience habits around major live entertainment events. Streaming platforms are increasingly competing for cultural moments that once belonged almost exclusively to broadcast television, from sports and awards shows to major live events.

For the Emmys, the six-year deal gives Prime Video a long runway to develop the telecast rather than treating each ceremony as a one-off broadcast partnership.

Free access remains a priority

Despite moving exclusively to a streaming platform, the Television Academy is stressing accessibility. Prime Video will allow anyone to watch the Emmy telecast for free, whether they are Prime subscribers or not.

Abrego said access had been a priority from the beginning of his tenure and argued that exclusivity in the awards’ home should not mean exclusivity in who can watch them.

That decision could be particularly important as the Emmys make the jump from an established broadcast model to streaming. Rather than asking audiences to add another subscription simply to watch the ceremony, the Academy and Amazon are removing that barrier.

Amazon sees a six-year opportunity

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said the company was honoured to become the global home of the Emmys for the next six years. He described the awards as a long-running celebration of television storytelling and talent.

For Prime Video, the deal brings one of the industry’s most established awards brands into its live programming portfolio. It also gives Amazon a recurring global entertainment property that can be developed over multiple years rather than a single broadcast cycle.

For the Television Academy, the longer arrangement provides continuity that was difficult to achieve under the rotating network model. The Academy and Amazon can build on lessons from one ceremony to the next, potentially allowing the format, partnerships and commercial strategy to evolve over the six-year period.

The 2027 show will be the real test

Planning for the 2027 ceremony has not yet begun in earnest, with the 2026 Emmys having taken place only three weeks ago. But the Television Academy says the new arrangement opens up significant possibilities for how the ceremony can be produced and presented.

Abrego said both sides are focused on creating an entertaining, meaningful and celebratory show, suggesting that the move is being viewed as more than a change of platform.

The real significance of the deal, however, lies in what it says about the changing television business. An awards ceremony created to celebrate television is now moving away from the medium’s traditional broadcast home and into the streaming ecosystem it has spent decades helping to shape.

From 2027, the Emmys will still have the red carpet, trophies and television’s biggest names. The difference is that the biggest channel in the room will be Prime Video.
