NEW DELHI: Prime Video is taking its Latin American ambitions up a gear. Amazon’s streaming service plans to invest more than $2 billion in the region between 2027 and 2030, stepping up spending on local films, series, reality shows and sports, Reuters reported.

The investment will focus on Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile, where Prime Video plans to more than double its local original productions compared with 2026.

The first sign of that bigger push will come in 2027, when the platform expects to release more than 25 new local titles across scripted series, films and reality formats. The slate will also bring back popular titles including La Oficina, Tremembé and Menem, alongside Marília.

Sports will form another important part of the strategy as Prime Video expands its live offering. With streaming platforms increasingly turning to sports rights to attract and retain subscribers, the investment gives Amazon another route to deepen its relationship with audiences in the region.

The move comes as the streaming business increasingly looks beyond Hollywood for growth. Global platforms are putting more money into locally produced stories and talent, hoping that content rooted in a market can do double duty win local viewers while travelling to audiences elsewhere.

For Prime Video, Latin America offers both a sizeable audience opportunity and access to a growing pool of creators and production talent. Kelly Day, Vice President of International, Prime Video, pointed to the region’s talent, stories and audiences as key to its potential.

The scale of the commitment also signals that Amazon is thinking beyond a short-term content push. Spreading more than $2 billion over four years gives Prime Video a long runway to expand its local catalogue and compete more aggressively with rival streaming platforms investing in Latin America.

With five markets in focus, more than 25 new titles planned for 2027 and sports increasingly part of the mix, Prime Video is betting that the next chapter of streaming growth may be written locally — even when the audience stretches far beyond Latin America.
