MUMBAI: It was a case of pressing start on nostalgia while loading up the future. Nintendo’s latest Direct presentation delivered a packed slate of announcements for the Switch and Switch 2, blending long-awaited revivals, blockbuster RPGs and fresh franchise entries in a showcase that quickly took over gaming conversations worldwide. The roughly 50-minute Nintendo Direct, held on 9 June 2026, was followed by a 95-minute Nintendo Treehouse: Live session, giving fans extended gameplay looks at several of the newly announced titles.

Stealing much of the spotlight was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake, a full-scale remake of one of gaming’s most celebrated titles. Scheduled for 2026 on Switch 2, the reveal offered a glimpse of a visually reimagined Hyrule and instantly became one of the event’s biggest talking points.

Square Enix delivered another crowd-pleaser with a fresh look at Kingdom Hearts IV, confirming the title for Nintendo’s next-generation console alongside other platforms. The trailer showcased Sora’s latest adventure in Quadratum, while the company also announced that the Kingdom Hearts HD Collection (I–III) will arrive on 8 October 2026.

Strategy fans had reason to celebrate too. Nintendo confirmed that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will launch on 17 September 2026, bringing a new chapter of tactical warfare and political intrigue to the long-running franchise.

The showcase leaned heavily into Nintendo’s RPG heritage. Deltarune Chapter 5 made an appearance, while updates and enhancements for the Xenoblade franchise further strengthened what many viewers described as one of the most role-playing-game-focused Direct presentations in recent memory.

Beyond the RPG crowd, Nintendo also rolled out fresh looks at Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders and Rhythm Heaven Groove, the latter introducing multiplayer elements to the rhythm-based series. A steady stream of third-party announcements, remasters and upgraded editions rounded out the presentation, highlighting Nintendo’s broader strategy of building momentum around Switch 2.

The immediate reaction online was enthusiastic, though not without debate. Social media platforms were flooded with praise for the Zelda remake, Kingdom Hearts IV and Fire Emblem announcements. At the same time, some fans argued the presentation relied too heavily on remakes, remasters and enhanced ports rather than unveiling more original first-party projects.

Still, even critics acknowledged the strength of the overall line-up. For RPG enthusiasts and longtime Nintendo followers, the Direct delivered several of the industry’s worst-kept rumours while adding a few surprises of its own.

The follow-up Treehouse session helped maintain that momentum, offering deeper gameplay demonstrations and giving players a clearer picture of what Nintendo’s next-generation roadmap looks like.

Whether remembered as a nostalgia-fuelled victory lap or a calculated setup for Switch 2’s future, the June Direct achieved one thing beyond dispute, it got gamers talking. And in the crowded battle for attention, that’s often the biggest power-up of all.
