Mortal Kombat II lands on HBO Max from July 24

MUMBAI: Finish him? Not quite, this time, the fight is heading straight to the living room. After making its mark in cinemas, Mortal Kombat II is preparing for its next round as HBO Max brings the action-packed video game adaptation to streaming later this month.

HBO Max has announced that Mortal Kombat II will begin streaming for subscribers on Friday, July 24, a little over two months after its theatrical debut. The platform will also release an American Sign Language (ASL) version of the film on the same day, featuring Visual Vernacular, a storytelling format that combines ASL, mime, facial expressions and body movement to deliver a highly visual narrative.

The film will make its HBO linear television debut a day later on Saturday, July 25, at 8 pm ET, extending its reach beyond streaming audiences.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II continues the story established in the 2021 reboot, itself a modern adaptation of the iconic fighting game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The series has enjoyed a long history on the big screen, beginning with Paul W.S. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat in 1995, followed by John R. Leonetti’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997, a sequel that remains one of the franchise’s least acclaimed cinematic outings.

Despite facing stiff competition at the box office, Mortal Kombat II has delivered respectable commercial results. The film has grossed $129.4 million worldwide against a reported $80 million production budget and became available on digital platforms in late June before making the jump to subscription streaming.

While its theatrical performance may not have been a knockout, the sequel comfortably outpaced the 2021 film, which was released simultaneously in cinemas and on streaming during the Covid-19 pandemic, limiting its box office potential.

The latest instalment has also fared better with critics. It currently holds a 65 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, improving on the 55 per cent earned by its predecessor. Gaming publication IGN awarded the film 8 out of 10, praising its unapologetic embrace of the franchise’s over-the-top action, brutal combat and entertaining spectacle.

Even as Mortal Kombat II prepares for its streaming debut, work on the franchise appears to be moving forward. Development of Mortal Kombat III reportedly began before the second film reached cinemas, although official updates have remained limited. The future of the series has also drawn attention amid questions over how the franchise could evolve following Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros.

For now, however, the focus remains on the latest chapter, as HBO Max looks to give Mortal Kombat II a second life on streaming where the battle for viewers may prove just as fierce as the tournament itself.
