New verification aims to curb AI-driven impersonation across Marketplace, Dating and Groups

Mumbai: In a world where AI can whip up convincing profiles in seconds, Meta wants users to know when there’s a real person behind the screen. The company has unveiled Facebook Verified, a free verification badge that uses a selfie-based identity check to help distinguish authentic individuals from fake or AI-generated accounts.

The feature, announced on Friday, will allow eligible Facebook users to verify their profiles by recording a short video selfie, which is matched against their existing profile photos. The process is free, typically takes only a few minutes and is designed to reassure users interacting on high-trust parts of the platform such as Marketplace, Dating and Groups.

Unlike Meta’s existing paid verification subscription, Facebook Verified carries no subscription fee. Users verify their identity once, and the badge follows their profile across supported Facebook experiences.

The rollout comes as AI-generated content, profiles and messages become increasingly common, creating new challenges for platforms trying to maintain authentic online interactions.

“Every day, billions of people use Facebook for genuine connection between real people. As AI makes it easier to generate content, profiles and messages, we want to provide a way for you to know there is a real person on the other side of a profile,” Meta Platforms said in its announcement.

The feature is currently available only to eligible Facebook users aged 18 years and above.

To qualify, users must be in good standing under Meta’s Community Standards, particularly rules covering fraud, scams and deceptive behaviour, and must show no signs of inauthentic activity.

The verification is currently limited to personal Facebook profiles and will not be available for Facebook Pages or Professional Mode accounts.

Meta said Facebook Verified is being introduced in phases, beginning with select markets before expanding globally.

Initially, the verification badge will appear on users’ profiles as well as across Facebook Marketplace, Dating and Groups, where users often interact with strangers or conduct transactions.

The company said it also plans to extend the badge to Feed posts over time.

Meta believes these are the areas where users most need reassurance that they are communicating with an authentic individual before buying an item, arranging a date or joining a community discussion.

Meta stressed that the badge is intended only to confirm that a profile belongs to a real person who has completed the selfie verification process and meets the platform’s trust and safety requirements.

The company cautioned that the badge should not be interpreted as an endorsement of a person’s credibility or behaviour. Verified users remain subject to Facebook’s existing policies, including its Community Standards and Commerce Policies.

The launch reflects a broader push by social media platforms to address rising concerns over AI-generated impersonation, scams and fraudulent profiles. As generative AI continues to blur the line between genuine and synthetic online identities, Meta is betting that a visible signal of human authenticity will help restore trust across Facebook’s social and commerce ecosystem.
