Meta Disables End-to-End Encryption on Instagram DMs
Feature switched off from 8 May 2026 due to low adoption and safety concerns.
MUMBAI: Meta has decided to stop playing hide and seek with Instagram messages. From 8 May 2026, the tech giant has switched off end-to-end encryption for Instagram’s direct messages, marking a notable U-turn from its earlier privacy-focused ambitions. The move means Meta can now access the content of messages, including photos, videos, and voice notes, when required.
The optional encryption feature, which had been available to users who manually enabled it, will no longer be supported. Existing users with encrypted chats have been notified in-app and encouraged to download any important conversations or media before they disappear.
Instagram will continue using standard encryption, which protects messages while they travel between devices and servers but still allows the platform to view content if needed similar to services like Gmail.
According to reports, the decision stems from low user adoption. Only a small proportion of Instagram users had turned on the extra privacy layer. Meta had previously pushed hard for encrypted messaging across its apps, making it the default on Facebook Messenger, but the Instagram rollout remained limited.
The change has sparked fresh debate about the trade-off between user privacy and online safety. Child protection groups, including the NSPCC, have welcomed the move, arguing that end-to-end encryption can hinder efforts to detect harmful content and protect children online.
While privacy advocates may see this as a step backwards, Meta appears to have prioritised practicality and safety over optional secrecy on a platform where most users never chose the locked-down option anyway.
