Meta brings Threads parental controls to India as teen safety push expands
New tools let parents monitor usage, manage privacy settings and control teen accounts
MUMBAI: Meta Platforms has expanded parental supervision to Threads globally, giving parents and guardians new controls over how teenagers use the text-based social platform.
The rollout, which began on 15 September, brings Threads into Meta’s Family Center, allowing parents to access supervision tools alongside controls for other Meta apps. The company had initially announced the feature for the US in July.
The move adds another layer of supervision to Threads’ existing Teen Accounts, which include protections such as private accounts and limits on the content shown to teenagers. Parents can also decide whether teens under 16 can make certain safety settings less restrictive.
With supervision enabled, parents can see how much time their teen has spent on Threads each day over the previous week, along with the weekly daily average.
They can also set daily time limits and block access during selected days and hours. If Threads is being used across multiple devices, the limit applies to the combined usage time.
The platform is also adding a Sleep Mode, allowing parents to restrict or block nighttime access. By default, notifications are muted and auto-replies are enabled between 10 pm and 7 am, although parents can adjust the schedule.
Parents can also manage who is allowed to tag their teenager in Threads posts and oversee certain privacy and sensitive-content preferences.
The controls are available through Family Center, which Meta has been developing as a central dashboard for parental supervision across its apps. Meta expanded Family Center in 2026 to consolidate supervision tools for Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Meta Horizon.
The Threads rollout comes as Meta continues to expand supervision and safety features for younger users. In India, Meta has previously made Family Center and parental supervision tools available for Instagram, while more recent updates have added additional protections and parental alerts.
Meta has also highlighted its work to combat child exploitation across its platforms, including proactive detection and removal of violating content.
The Threads update gives parents greater visibility into usage and more control over selected account settings, while Meta continues to expand its broader set of teen safety and supervision tools.
