Instagram tightens rules for AI-generated profiles
Undisclosed AI personas could lose access to Reels, Explore and other recommendations
MUMBAI: On Instagram, being fake is no longer something to keep under wraps. The platform is tightening its rules for AI-generated personas, replacing its “AI creator” label with the more explicit “AI-generated profile” tag and warning that undisclosed AI identities could lose visibility across the platform.
The change targets profiles built around AI-generated people, rather than real creators who simply use AI tools to edit images, write captions, generate graphics or enhance other content.
Instagram had been testing the “AI creator” label earlier this year, but said user feedback suggested the wording could be confusing. The concern was particularly acute when an account appeared to represent a real person when, in fact, the identity was entirely generated by AI.
Under the updated system, creators using the previous label will see it replaced with “AI-generated profile” in their settings. They can review the designation, confirm that it applies or remove it if their account no longer falls into the category.
The distinction is important. A real person using AI to polish photographs or create content does not need the profile-level label. The requirement is aimed at accounts where the person portrayed by the profile is itself AI-generated.
The bigger sting comes from what happens when an AI persona fails to disclose its identity.
If Instagram detects an AI-generated person operating without the required disclosure, the profile could become ineligible for recommendations. That could limit its ability to reach people who do not already follow it, cutting visibility across Reels, Explore and other recommendation surfaces.
For AI persona creators, that makes the label more than a transparency badge, it could become a ticket to staying discoverable.
Instagram has also acknowledged that its detection systems can sometimes get things wrong. Accounts that successfully appeal a decision can regain eligibility for recommendations.
The move reflects Instagram’s attempt to draw a clearer line between AI-assisted creativity and AI-created identities, as synthetic personalities become increasingly difficult for users to distinguish from real people.
