Instagram refreshes wordmark after a decade with sharper, modern design

Meta-owned platform redraws familiar script while keeping its recognisable look intact

NEW DELHI: Instagram is giving its name a fresh look, but not quite giving its identity a makeover.

Instagram has refreshed its wordmark for the first time in more than a decade, with the new design featuring redrawn letterforms while retaining the familiar script style.

The update was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on both Instagram and Threads on August 13. Mosseri described the new wordmark as cleaner, sharper and more modern, while retaining references to the original design.

“The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh,” Mosseri said in a post.

The latest change follows Instagram’s broader visual overhaul in 2016, when the platform replaced its classic brown camera icon with a rainbow stripe with the colourful pink-gradient design that remains its primary icon.

The refreshed wordmark is a more restrained change. Rather than introducing an entirely new typeface or visual identity, Instagram has redrawn the existing lettering to give it a cleaner appearance.

For Instagram, the refresh represents an attempt to modernise a familiar visual element without straying too far from the identity users have recognised for years.

After a decade of keeping its name largely unchanged, the platform has finally decided that even its wordmark could use a little editing.
