Instagram, Facebook and Messenger hit by widespread global outage

MUMBAI: For millions of users, the social scroll suddenly came to a screeching halt. Instagram, Facebook and Messenger experienced a widespread disruption on Sunday, July 19, leaving users across multiple countries unable to refresh feeds, upload content or even access their accounts, as reports of outages surged worldwide.

According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, more than 2,000 users had reported problems with Instagram at the time of writing, while Facebook and Messenger also registered more than 100 complaints, indicating that the disruption extended across several Meta-owned services.

Users described a range of issues affecting the platforms. On Instagram, many reported blank home feeds, missing profiles and an inability to upload Stories, while others said the app displayed only a welcome page instead of fresh content. Several users also shared screenshots showing empty feeds and stalled timelines.

Facebook users encountered similar problems. Many reported receiving an “Account Temporarily Unavailable” message, while others said their news feeds loaded briefly before returning error messages. Some users noted that Facebook continued to work on the mobile app but remained inaccessible through desktop browsers.

Complaints emerged from multiple regions, including India, the UK, the UAE and parts of the United States, suggesting the disruption was not limited to a single geography.

At the time of writing, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage, and the company had not provided an estimated timeline for service restoration.

While some users attempted troubleshooting by clearing browser or app caches, logging out and back in, force-closing applications or checking internet connections, such steps are unlikely to resolve issues caused by a platform-wide service disruption. In cases where Facebook displays the “Account Temporarily Unavailable” message, the error may occasionally be linked to local cache problems or account-specific restrictions, but during widespread outages it is typically associated with server-side issues.

The incident once again highlights the interconnected nature of Meta’s ecosystem. Because Instagram, Facebook and Messenger share much of the same underlying infrastructure, technical problems affecting core systems can quickly ripple across multiple services, disrupting everything from social feeds to messaging.

For now, users appear to have little option but to wait. Until Meta restores affected systems or provides further clarification, refreshing the app may prove less effective than simply refreshing one’s patience.
