MUMBAI: Game on, India—while much of the world hit pause, Indian gamers pressed ‘play’. The country’s mobile gaming market staged a strong comeback in the second quarter of 2026, with downloads climbing to 2 billion, up 14.2 per cent quarter on quarter, defying the global trend where downloads slipped 4.2 per cent over the same period.

According to Sensor Tower, the rebound reinforces India’s position as the world’s largest mobile game acquisition market, while rising player spending suggests it is also emerging as one of the fastest-growing gaming monetisation markets.

Leading the charts once again was Ludo King, which retained its position as India’s most-downloaded mobile game. The homegrown title is now closing in on one billion cumulative downloads in India and is expected to cross the milestone in Q3 2026.

The quarter’s surprise winners, however, came from an unlikely corner. Minimalist puzzle games enjoyed a breakout run, with Arrow Puzzle, Arrows Puzzle Escape and Arrows GO! securing the second, third and fourth spots respectively. Built around simple gameplay and advertising-led monetisation, the titles generated more than 11 per cent of their global advertising revenue from India across the 19 markets tracked by Sensor Tower’s Ad Monetization data, second only to the United States.

The trend highlights India’s growing importance not just as a source of massive user volumes but also as a key advertising market where scale increasingly translates into revenue.

Player spending also bucked the global slowdown. India’s mobile gaming revenue crossed $106 million in Q2 2026, rising 3.7 per cent quarter on quarter, even as worldwide mobile gaming revenue declined 6.2 per cent.

The country’s top four highest-grossing games held their positions from a year earlier, reflecting the resilience of established franchises. The biggest mover was eFootball, which rode the excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup to record a 214 per cent year-on-year jump in downloads and nearly 29 per cent growth in revenue, propelling it into India’s top five highest-grossing games.

Another standout performer was Kingshot, a 4X strategy title that has rapidly gained traction since entering the Indian market in 2025. Its revenue soared more than 13-fold, underlining the growing appetite for deeper mid-core gaming experiences among Indian players.

The report also found that mid-core games continued to dominate India’s revenue rankings, while casual games remained the second-largest segment. Although hypercasual games did not feature among the top 10 earners, the category delivered more than 180 per cent quarter-on-quarter revenue growth, signalling improving monetisation for ad-supported titles.

Sensor Tower noted that the broader app economy is also strengthening alongside gaming. India’s mobile app market reached a record $345 million in revenue during Q2 2026, with non-gaming apps posting more than 50 per cent year-on-year growth, driven by Generative AI, video streaming and digital services.

Taken together, the figures suggest India’s mobile ecosystem is evolving beyond sheer scale. While downloads continue to surge, the real story is that both apps and games are increasingly converting engagement into revenue, positioning India as one of the world’s fastest-growing digital monetisation markets.
