MUMBAI: For OTTplay, the credits have rolled before the sequel could be greenlit. HT Media has pulled the plug on its OTT aggregation platform OTTplay, bringing the curtain down on a venture that struggled to find a sustainable business model in an increasingly crowded streaming marketplace. The decision, disclosed during the company’s Q4 FY26 earnings call, marks the end of a multi-year effort to carve out a space in India’s fast-evolving OTT ecosystem. Management described the move as a “deliberate and value-accretive reset”, reflecting a broader strategy to sharpen focus on businesses with clearer paths to profitability.

Behind the shutdown lies a familiar challenge confronting many digital media ventures: attracting users is one thing, making the economics work is another.

According to HT Media, OTTplay underwent multiple rounds of strategic review over the past several quarters. Teams experimented with different approaches across content partnerships, customer acquisition strategies and subscriber retention initiatives in an effort to improve performance and build scale.

Yet despite those efforts, the platform failed to establish a long-term sustainable model.

Speaking during the earnings call, Group CEO Piyush Gupta said the company had invested significant time evaluating alternatives before ultimately deciding that continuing operations no longer made financial sense.

The challenge was compounded by intensifying competition in the OTT aggregation space. Telecom operators and large digital ecosystems have increasingly bundled entertainment subscriptions with mobile, broadband and digital service packages, creating formidable distribution advantages that smaller standalone aggregators have struggled to match.

OTTplay attempted to differentiate itself by targeting Tier II and Tier III markets, betting that growing digital consumption beyond India’s metros would create an opportunity for a specialised aggregation platform. While the strategy generated interest, HT Media acknowledged that it did not evolve into a commercially viable proposition.

The company also explored potential strategic options for the business, including discussions with prospective partners and buyers. However, those conversations did not culminate in a transaction.

From a financial standpoint, HT Media expects the impact of the closure to be limited.

The company confirmed that new subscriptions were discontinued after March 31, 2026, while existing subscribers will continue to receive services until their current plans expire. Management indicated that any residual losses associated with the business are expected to remain marginal.

The shutdown highlights the increasingly difficult economics of OTT aggregation, where platforms must balance rising content costs, customer acquisition expenses and intense competition from larger players with deeper pockets and broader ecosystems.

It also reflects a wider trend across the media industry, where companies are reassessing digital bets made during the streaming boom and prioritising profitability over scale.

For HT Media, the move represents more than the closure of a single platform. It is part of a broader portfolio rationalisation exercise aimed at concentrating resources on businesses capable of delivering sustainable growth and long-term shareholder value.

In a market flooded with content choices, OTTplay’s challenge was never helping viewers decide what to watch. It was convincing enough of them to stay long enough to make the business work.
