Google Pay adds Gemini powered AI assistant for personal finance
New feature offers spending insights and financial guidance in 10 languages
MUMBAI: Your next money manager may not wear a suit, it might simply answer when you ask. Google Pay is bringing generative AI deeper into everyday banking with the launch of Ask Google Pay, a Gemini-powered assistant designed to help users better understand their spending habits, savings and financial decisions.
The new opt-in feature integrates Gemini’s conversational AI directly into the Google Pay app, allowing users to ask questions about their finances in natural language. Drawing on a user’s transaction history, the assistant generates personalised spending insights while giving users control over how their financial data is used.
The tool goes beyond tracking expenses. Users can ask questions about mutual funds, systematic investment plans (SIPs), compound interest, credit scores and the differences between India’s tax regimes, making the app as much a financial learning platform as a payments service.
Supporting both text and voice interactions, Ask Google Pay is available in 10 Indian languages, reflecting Google’s push to make AI-powered financial tools accessible to a broader audience across the country.
Google said the assistant is intended to provide educational financial guidance, helping users make more informed decisions rather than offering personalised investment or financial advice.
The feature can also recommend financial products based on user requirements. For instance, someone planning a holiday can ask the assistant to suggest credit cards suited to their expected spending patterns, adding a personalised layer to product discovery within the app.
Alongside the AI rollout, Google has launched the Google Pay Flex SBI Card, a co-branded credit card developed in partnership with SBI Card, as it expands the range of financial services available through the platform.
The launch highlights how digital payments apps are evolving beyond transaction processing. As generative AI becomes more deeply embedded into fintech, platforms are increasingly positioning themselves as everyday financial companions offering spending analysis, educational support and personalised recommendations alongside payments. For Google Pay, the latest addition signals a broader ambition to turn routine transactions into richer financial experiences powered by artificial intelligence.
