MUMBAI: The battle for the Iron Throne will have to wait a little longer. The developers of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros have pushed the real-time strategy game’s launch to early 2027, saying the extra development time will help deliver a more polished experience for both strategy fans and followers of the fantasy franchise.

In a new development update, the studio said progress on the game has been steady since its announcement and promised to share more gameplay details over the coming months ahead of larger reveals later this year.

Players will be able to command four playable factions, House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen and the Night King’s Army of the Dead, each featuring unique heroes capable of influencing battles through special abilities, levelling systems and buffs for nearby troops.

The update showcased Jon Snow as a frontline commander who rallies allied forces, while Tywin Lannister was presented as a tactical leader focused on battlefield coordination and strengthening the Lannister army.

Combat remains a key focus for the development team, with the studio placing particular emphasis on responsive controls, realistic unit behaviour and impactful large-scale battles. Rather than directing individual soldiers, players will command entire squads that react dynamically to battlefield orders.

The developers also highlighted faction-specific “trump card” units designed to shift the momentum of combat. Examples include cavalry capable of breaking through exposed archer formations and giant units that can launch enemy squads into the air with powerful melee attacks.

Tactical counters will play an important role in engagements. For instance, charging cavalry can be neutralised by deploying specialised anti-cavalry infantry such as spear units, encouraging players to adapt their army compositions instead of relying on sheer numbers.

The game will feature battlefields spread across Westeros, including iconic locations such as King’s Landing and The Wall alongside original maps inspired by the continent’s castles, kingdoms and war-torn regions.

One of the maps currently in development is Ashemark in the Westerlands, a location linked to Robb Stark’s campaign during the War of the Five Kings. Designed primarily for one-on-one matches, the battlefield features two main lanes, defensible positions and multiple opportunities for flanking, map control and counterattacks.

The developers said each map is being built with distinct terrain layouts and strategic identities while supporting the large-scale army movement central to the game’s skirmish mode. Further details on territory control and battlefield mechanics will be revealed in a future gameplay showcase.

Confirming the revised release schedule, the studio said the decision to delay the game reflects its commitment to meeting the expectations of both real-time strategy players and Game of Thrones fans.

With iconic houses, hero-led armies and large-scale battles beginning to take shape, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is sharpening its sword before entering the battlefield, even if the march to the Iron Throne now begins in early 2027.
