Esports World Cup 2026 opens in Paris with $75 million prize pool
Seven-week tournament features 2,000-plus players, 200 clubs and 25 competitions
PARIS: The game has officially loaded and this time, the world’s biggest stage belongs to esports. The Esports World Cup 2026 got underway in Paris with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at La Seine Musicale, marking the first international edition of the tournament and kicking off seven weeks of elite competition featuring the world’s top players and clubs.
Blending music, cinematic storytelling, augmented reality and French cultural flair, the ceremony welcomed more than 2,000 players, 200 esports clubs and representatives from over 100 countries, all set to compete across 25 tournaments in 24 games for a record-breaking $75 million prize pool.
From the outset, the event celebrated the journey of players to the global stage while introducing Paris as the new home of the competition. The production combined large-scale visuals, orchestral music, dance performances and immersive stage design to merge esports with the city’s cultural identity.
Among the evening’s standout moments was the unveiling of the Esports World Cup Club Championship trophy, signalling the start of the race to crown the world’s top esports organisation.
Entertainment took centre stage alongside gaming. Aya Nakamura, Theodora, DJ Snake and Mosimann delivered live performances throughout the ceremony, with DJ Snake closing the global broadcast before continuing with an extended set for the audience in Paris. Mosimann later brought the night to a close with a high-energy live performance.
The ceremony opened with an esports-focused pre-show hosted by Doigby before transitioning into the main spectacle, which was designed for both the live audience and millions of viewers watching worldwide.
Adding a cinematic identity to the tournament, organisers also introduced the EWC 2026 Orchestral Anthem, created in collaboration with 2WEI Music and Hollywood Scoring. The anthem will accompany the tournament throughout its broadcast, from qualification rounds to the championship finale.
Commenting on the opening, Mike McCabe, Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer at the Esports Foundation, said the ceremony was designed to celebrate both the arrival of the Esports World Cup in Paris and the city’s cultural influence through artists who represent modern France.
The tournament now shifts from spectacle to competition, with daily matches set to take place across multiple venues in the French capital. Over the next seven weeks, the world’s leading players and clubs will battle for titles across 24 games, while the coveted Club Championship promises to crown the strongest esports organisation on the global stage.
