MUMBAI: The Force is about to roll for initiative. Dungeons & Dragons is heading to a galaxy far, far away after Wizards of the Coast announced an official Star Wars expansion, bringing one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises into its tabletop role-playing universe.

The crossover will arrive in 2027 under D&D’s Universes Beyond label. Developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm, it will form part of the game’s Season of Rebellion, scheduled for the second half of next year.

The announcement marked the second major Universes Beyond project for D&D, following the previously revealed World of Warcraft expansion, as Wizards of the Coast continues to broaden the game’s reach through licensed fantasy and pop culture worlds.

While details about the Star Wars release remain tightly under wraps, the reveal provided a memorable finale to the Gen Con presentation, with Darth Vader making a surprise appearance on stage to announce the collaboration.

The Star Wars expansion also caps an unusually busy release roadmap for Dungeons & Dragons over the next two years.

The schedule begins later this year with the Season of Magic, headlined by the Arcana Unleashed expansion. The release adds eight new subclasses, 10 backgrounds, 29 feats, 33 spells, 19 magical creatures, alongside additional content. It will be followed by Deadfall, a magical espionage campaign designed for characters between levels 11 and 20.

In 2027, D&D will return to one of its most iconic settings through the Season of Survival, which revives Dark Sun. The publisher said the accompanying book will be shrink-wrapped and carry a content warning because of its themes of violence, sex and nudity.

That will be followed by the Season of Sword & Sorcery, which revisits Greyhawk through the new Crown of the Witch Queen expansion before players eventually journey into the Star Wars-inspired Season of Rebellion.

The growing list of crossover projects has prompted questions from long-time fans about whether D&D is shifting its focus away from its traditional fantasy worlds, including the Forgotten Realms.

Wizards of the Coast sought to address those concerns, stressing that Universes Beyond is intended to complement, not replace the game’s core settings.

“We want to let our community know that D&D Universes Beyond is additive to the incredible roadmap we have for our own worlds,” the company said in a blog post outlining its future product plans. It added that additional staff had been recruited to support the crossover initiative while maintaining development of D&D’s original settings.

With World of Warcraft and now Star Wars joining the tabletop adventure, Wizards of the Coast is signalling a broader strategy to bring some of entertainment’s biggest universes to the gaming table while assuring fans that the heart of Dungeons & Dragons will continue beating firmly within its own legendary worlds.
