Chhota Bheem musical returns to Mumbai with a fresh stage adventure
Green Gold Animation’s first live theatre adaptation returns on 17 October with nine original songs and 30 performers
MUMBAI: Dholakpur is trading the small screen for the big stage, and this time, Bheem’s adventures come with a live soundtrack. Chhota Bheem: The Musical, the first-ever stage musical based on the popular children’s IP created by Green Gold Animation, returns to Mumbai on 17 October at the Nehru Centre Auditorium, following three performances that drew an enthusiastic response from children and families.
The live production takes Bheem and his friends on a mission to rescue Princess Indumati from Thunndazork. Their journey winds through enchanted forests, underwater kingdoms, magical islands, deserts and icy mountains, bringing the animated series’ familiar world into a theatrical setting.
There is plenty happening beyond the heroics. The production features 30 performers, supported by a 12-member backstage team and six technical crew members. Nine original songs and choreographed dance sequences move the story along, while character costumes, LED visuals and stage lighting help transform the auditorium into the musical’s shifting landscapes.
Produced by Bhoomi Nathwani and directed by Amatya Goradia, with Shruti Sharma as creative head, the show marks Chhota Bheem’s first foray into live theatre.
Rajiv Chilaka, founder and managing director of Green Gold Animation, said the move to the stage was part of a wider effort to take homegrown intellectual property beyond its original format. He said Chhota Bheem had grown from an animated character into a part of the lives of millions of children and families, adding that stories able to thrive across formats could build lasting relevance, reach new audiences and create value over time.
For Nathwani, producer at Neemtree Entertainment, the response to the initial run underlined the characters’ enduring appeal. She said the team was bringing the musical back with additional shows to give more families a chance to experience the adventure, music and characters live.
The Mumbai run could be only the opening act. Green Gold Animation is exploring opportunities to take the production to multiple cities across India, potentially extending the franchise’s reach from screens to theatre audiences.
Chhota Bheem: The Musical will be staged on 17 October at Nehru Centre Auditorium, Mumbai. Tickets are available on BookMyShow.
