MUMBAI: Grand expectations could soon become grand earnings. Grand Theft Auto VI is on course to become the biggest entertainment launch in history, with games market research firm Newzoo estimating the title could generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in revenue during its opening week.

The forecast, published ahead of the game’s expected launch later this year, suggests Rockstar Games’ long-awaited sequel has already amassed around $260 million in global pre-orders, despite still being roughly five months away from release.

According to Newzoo, digital pre-orders reached about $180 million across the United States and the five largest European markets by the final week of June. Extrapolating that demand globally, the firm believes the bulk of pre-orders are still to come, setting the stage for an unprecedented launch.

If realised, the figures would comfortably eclipse the debut of Grand Theft Auto V, which remains the highest-selling premium video game ever released. The 2013 title generated $800 million within its first 24 hours, crossed $1 billion in three days, and earned approximately $1.15 billion in its first five days after selling around 16 million copies.

Several factors could help GTA 6 surpass those milestones. The new title carries an $80 price tag, above the industry’s standard $70, boosting revenue per copy. Analysts also point to significantly stronger consumer demand after a 13-year wait for the next instalment in the blockbuster franchise.

Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide over its lifetime, making it the best-selling premium game in history. Rockstar’s next biggest success, Red Dead Redemption 2, has sold around 85 million copies, highlighting the scale of the GTA franchise’s popularity.

Industry observers believe the combination of pent-up demand, higher pricing and the franchise’s global appeal could make GTA 6 not only the biggest video game launch ever but one of the largest entertainment product launches across any medium.

While the projections remain estimates until the game reaches players, they underline the extraordinary expectations surrounding Rockstar’s next release. If the forecasts hold true, Grand Theft Auto VI may not just raise the bar for gaming launches, it could rewrite the industry’s record books altogether.
