WASHINGTON: Another global honour has struck a chord for A.R. Rahman. The Academy Award-winning composer, producer and philanthropist has been presented with the prestigious Golden Plate Award by the American Academy of Achievement at the 56th International Achievement Summit in Washington, D.C..

Rahman received the honour from acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson during a ceremony held at the historic Mellon Auditorium, joining an elite list of global achievers recognised for their contributions across diverse fields.

Widely regarded as one of the American Academy of Achievement’s highest honours, the Golden Plate Award celebrates individuals whose accomplishments have left a lasting impact on society and inspired generations around the world.

Speaking after receiving the award, A.R. Rahman said he was deeply humbled by the recognition and credited India, his collaborators and his fans for shaping his journey.

“I am truly humbled to receive this honour. It wouldn’t have been possible without the people of India, the inspiration I’ve drawn from the country, the directors and creative partners I’ve had the privilege of working with, and the fans who have supported me throughout the years and inspired me to keep pushing myself,” he said.

Rahman added that the recognition was not only an honour but also a reminder to continue striving for growth while proudly representing India on the global stage.

The award places Rahman among a distinguished group of past recipients that includes celebrated figures such as Haruki Murakami, Julie Andrews, Maya Angelou, Francis Ford Coppola, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Michael J. Fox, Samuel L. Jackson and Andre Agassi.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Rahman has become one of India’s most influential cultural ambassadors, earning international acclaim through film scores, albums, live performances and cross-cultural collaborations. His work has won multiple global accolades, including Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, while helping introduce Indian music to audiences worldwide.

The latest recognition adds another milestone to a career defined by innovation and artistic excellence. More importantly, it reinforces Rahman’s enduring ability to connect cultures through music, proving once again that great melodies know no borders.
